Verdict
The clearest difference is ratings volume: Garmin Messenger™ at 13K against GZERO's 11. Garmin Messenger™ also leads on monetization model (free vs ad-supported) and chart position (#62 vs unranked). GZERO's advantage is rating (4.8 vs 4.6) and update cadence (weekly vs every 3 weeks). On price, ads, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
GZERO holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 4.6. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Garmin Messenger™ has 13K ratings behind it against 11, so its average is the more settled of the two.
Garmin Messenger™ ships an update every 3 weeks, GZERO weekly. The most recent releases landed on October 17, 2026 and September 27, 2026 respectively.
