Stray Scanner vs WurldCam
Price, ratings, monetisation and update history for both apps, side by side — with what reviewers say about each.
Stray Scanner
Capture color, depth, and IMU data using your device's LiDAR sensor. Export these datasets to your computer for machine learning and dense mapping projects. Streamline the process of collecting RGB-D data without complex calibration.
- Record color images
- Capture depth frames
- Export IMU measurements
- Estimate camera position
- Access camera calibration matrix
- Transfer datasets to desktop

Note: requires a device with LiDAR. The iPad Pro, iPhone 12 Pro or iPhone 12 Pro Max currently have LiDAR sensors on them. Stray Scanner allows you to record color, depth and IMU datasets and export them to your desktop computer. For machine learning and dense mapping applications, you need a dataset to work with. Stray Scanner allows you to collect RGB-D datasets with your iPhone. The recorded datasets contain: - color images - depth frames from the LiDAR sensor - depth confidence maps - camera position estimates for each frame - camera calibration matrix - IMU measurements Once recorded, the datasets can easily be moved to your desktop computer by connecting your device with a Lightning cable and accessing the files through Finder. Put your iPhone's LiDAR scanner to good use. No more fumbling around calibrating and configuring depth sensors. Shoot datasets straight from your iPhone.
WurldCam
Read full descriptionHide full description
WurldCam turns an iPhone Pro into a posed RGBD capture rig. Every recording contains the colour video, the LiDAR depth map, the camera's position and orientation for each frame, and per-pixel depth confidence — written together into a single file as you record, not stitched together afterwards. Depth is stored losslessly, so the millimetres your sensor measured are the millimetres you get back. Built for people who need the geometry, not just the picture: 3D reconstruction, robotics datasets, SLAM evaluation, NeRF and Gaussian-splat capture, photogrammetry research. • Records to the open wurld format (Matroska/WebM container) or Record3D .r3d • Lossless 16-bit depth, per-frame poses in metres with quaternion rotations • Files stay on your device — no account, no cloud, no analytics • Retrieve captures via the share sheet or the Files app • Read them with the open-source Python and JavaScript tools Requires a LiDAR-equipped iPhone. The support page covers device requirements, retrieving captures via Files, reading the format, why frames get skipped, and where to file issues — so it answers the questions review may probe rather than being a placeholder.

Verdict
Stray Scanner and WurldCam are too close to call on the numbers: across 5 compared parameters — price, ads, in-app purchases and device support among them — neither pulls far enough ahead to decide it. What separates them is feature set and interface, not measurable difference.
