Every color has an underlying value between pure white and pure black. Being able to translate a color into its value is surprisingly difficult, but essential for bringing your paintings to life. ValuePal is the only gray scale value finder that will instantly give you the grey scale value of any part of an image with just a touch. You can then compare your value to a reference image by swiping back and forth. An advanced feature of ValuePal allows you to create a “value map” of all areas having the same value. This helps you see a pattern for that value(s). Another feature, “bracketing”, can be used to establish the fundamental structure of your painting. It is useful in visualising paths of light and dark in your painting. The ’Notan’ feature converts all shapes to black and white. This helps the artist identify light and dark patterns in their work. No other app has more features to make you a better painter! ValuePal is the essential artist tool!

Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is price: Clevast at Free against ValuePal's $14.99. Clevast also leads on rating (4.2 vs 3.0) and ads (none vs shown). ValuePal's advantage is review sentiment (33% vs 12%) and iOS requirement (9.0 vs 15.0). On in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Clevast holds the better App Store score, 4.2 against 3.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Clevast has 182 ratings behind it against 2, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 33% of ValuePal's written reviews are positive against 12% of Clevast's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

ValuePal ships an update every 21 months, Clevast every 2 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 6, 2026 and October 10, 2026 respectively.
