Overworld Map
Read full descriptionHide full description
Your world, revealed tile by tile. Overworld turns the world around you into a fog-of-war minimap. The map starts hidden. As you walk, run, ride, or wander, the fog lifts cell by cell to reveal streets, parks, and paths. Over time, your explored world fills in. No streaks, badges, leaderboards, or fitness goals. Just you and the map. HOW IT WORKS • Move through the world with the app open or in your pocket. • Nearby map cells reveal as you go. • Pause tracking, adjust the fog, or erase an area to explore it again. PRIVATE BY DESIGN Overworld is local-first and has no developer-run server. • No account or sign-up. • No analytics, advertising, or developer tracking. • Location is processed on-device and is not sent to the developer. • Overworld stores revealed grid cells and their first-reveal times for playback—not raw GPS fixes, routes, or speeds. • Standard and password-protected map backups are free. You choose where exported files are saved or shared. MAKE IT YOURS Choose a light, standard, or dense fog layer. The free Classic fog draws a light grid over each discovery; Soft Veil adds adjustable rounded edges, and Glowing Grid lights up the grid — both with Overworld Pro. Pick your on-map avatar: the classic puck, the frosted-glass lantern-carrying Wayfarer, or Paper Plane. Preview your selected avatar in Settings. Wayfarer and Paper Plane turn with your travel direction. SHARE YOUR MAP • Share your current view as an image for free, or export a short replay video with Overworld Pro. • A Home Screen widget keeps your explored world one glance away. • Both are rendered entirely on-device. OVERWORLD PRO A one-time purchase unlocks map-history playback and replay video export, heading follow and the 3D Explore view with remembered pinch-to-zoom, satellite and hybrid maps, additional fog styles and palettes, accent themes, Tight or Wide reveal widths, and the Wayfarer and Paper Plane avatars. Playback history is recorded locally for everyone, so upgrading later includes discoveries made after the playback update. No subscription or recurring fee. Family Sharing and Restore Purchases are supported. Wayfarer and Paper Plane are both included with Overworld Pro; no separate avatar purchase is required. WHY BACKGROUND LOCATION? Always location lets your map keep revealing while your screen is off, another app is open, or your phone is in your pocket. GOOD TO KNOW • Continued background location use can reduce battery life. Pause revealing at any time in Settings. • Your live explored map is stored in the app and may be included in device backups according to your iOS and iCloud settings. • Overworld cannot recover a forgotten export password. Go somewhere. The map is waiting.

Verdict
The clearest difference is in-app purchases: X at none against Overworld Map's 1. X also leads on iOS requirement (13.0 vs 26.0). Overworld Map's advantage is update cadence (fortnightly vs monthly). On price, ads and device support there is nothing between them.
