SMELLiT is an app behind a collaboration project spanning 4 labs across Europe, the D2Smell project. Funded by the European Research Council, it studies human olfaction where it actually happens - in kitchens, on streets, on buses, in the air you move through all day without thinking about it. Every report you send is something no laboratory could have produced. WHAT YOU DO Four times a day, at random moments, the app asks simple questions: can you smell anything right now? What is it? How long have you been smelling it, and where? Together with the pictures the and the free description of the smell you will provide, this first of its kind database will go a long way helping the olfaction research march forward. The times are random on purpose. The smells you notice when you go looking for them are not the smells that make up our naturalistic daily live. WHAT YOU GET Get paid for taking part in real research. Complete the study and receive a gift voucher by email, with a bonus for finishing all 40 questionnaires. If you would rather your participation simply contribute to the science, you can waive the payment instead. After you finish, an elaborated portfolio of your nose type will be provided: where does YOUR nose fall relative to everyone else? It is not a race, and there are no right answers, so trying to hard will actually hurt your results. Be your true self, and you will find your true nose. :) YOUR DATA The study is approved by the Weizmann Institute of Science Institutional Review Board. You read and accept a full consent statement before anything is collected. You can find more information in out Privacy Policy statement. LANGUAGES SMELLiT is available in 13 languages: Arabic, Danish, English, French, German, Hebrew, Icelandic, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish. Arabic and Hebrew read right to left throughout. Join D2Smell, and use your nose to help discover what the nose knows it knows.

Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: SMELLiT at 4.5 against Ipsos GeoQuest's 1.0. SMELLiT also leads on ads (none vs shown) and ratings volume (61 vs 1). Ipsos GeoQuest's advantage is review sentiment (42% vs 0%) and iOS requirement (12.0 vs 15.0). On price, update cadence, in-app purchases and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
SMELLiT holds the better App Store score, 4.5 against 1.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: SMELLiT has 61 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 42% of Ipsos GeoQuest's written reviews are positive against 0% of SMELLiT's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Both ship on a similar rhythm, roughly every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on September 14, 2026 and September 24, 2026 respectively.
