SMELLiT asks what you smell, four times a day. It is the research app of d2smell, an international collaboration of four labs. The project is funded by the European Research Council and studies what people actually smell in everyday life. Every answer you send is something no laboratory could have produced. WHAT YOU DO At random times within your waking hours, you get a notification. You have 15 minutes to open it. Then answer a few short questions about what you’re smelling right now: describe it, rate it, say where you are and take a quick photo without people in it. Smelling nothing? We still want to hear from you! The times are random on purpose. The smells you notice when you go looking for them are not the smells that make up our daily life. The study is 40 questionnaires, spread over about 10 days (longer if you miss some). WHAT YOU GET Get paid with a gift card by email, with a bonus for finishing all 40. You can also waive the payment as a donation to science. You can stop at any time. When you have completed all 40, you will see your own smell story. There are no right answers, so trying too hard will actually hurt your results. Be yourself, and you will find your true nose. WHO CAN TAKE PART Adults with a normal sense of smell, using one phone for the whole study. You sign up with your mobile number. Recruitment is open in selected countries, and the app tells you if yours is not one of them. YOUR DATA The study is approved by the Weizmann Institute of Science Institutional Review Board. You read and accept a consent statement before anything is collected. No ads and no ad tracking. More in our privacy policy. Join d2smell, and use your nose to help discover what the nose knows it knows.
