Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is review sentiment: Apex at 100% against Speedometer's 71%. Apex also leads on update cadence (monthly vs every 2 months). Speedometer's advantage is rating (4.8 vs 4.4) and ratings volume (250 vs 25). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS

CostPrice · In-app purchases · Ads · Monetization

Both are free to download. Speedometer sells 8 in-app purchases, starting at $2.99 per 7 days and Apex sells 7 in-app purchases, starting at $3.99 per 7 days. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Speedometer holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 4.4. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Speedometer has 250 ratings behind it against 25, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 71% of Speedometer's written reviews are positive against 100% of Apex's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Speedometer ships an update every 2 months, Apex monthly. The most recent releases landed on October 27, 2026 and October 24, 2026 respectively.
