Molecules is an application for viewing three-dimensional renderings of molecules and manipulating them using your fingers. You can rotate the molecules by moving your finger across the display, zoom in or out by using two-finger pinch gestures, or pan the molecule by moving two fingers across the screen at once. These structures can be viewed in both ball-and-stick and spacefilling visualization modes. Molecules can be stored on your handheld device for later viewing and are loaded via a standard document-based file browser. Custom molecular structures can be downloaded to the application via file sharing or iCloud, and obtained via sources like the RCSB Protein Data Bank (http://www.rcsb.org/pdb), an international repository of biological molecules and their 3-D structures, or NCBI's PubChem (http://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov), a public database of compounds. For more details, please visit our website. Molecules is a BSD-licensed open source project.

AR VR Molecules Editor allows one to build and manipulate 3D molecules models of organic and inorganic compounds in a smartphone VR headset. This is a valuable tool for chemistry students for learning about molecular bonding with the aid of VR visualization. The app is designed for high school or college students taking chemistry courses. All molecules are essentially 3D objects and one very efficient way to learn more and deeper about atoms and bonds is by VR and AR. Augmented reality helps to make connections from the abstract to the real world. Are you looking for an app that allows students to construct molecules in VR and AR? AR VR Molecules Editor is a very effective app for this purpose as it allows organic and inorganic molecular structures to be built with single, double and triple bonds, as well as cyclic compounds. The molecules can be visualized in 3D using stick, ball and stick and space-filling (CPK) models. FEATURES: • Building molecule models of any organic or inorganic compound using most of periodic table elements in VR. • Support of single, double and triple bonds. • Building molecule models of cyclic compounds. • Visualization of Wireframe style, Stick style, Ball and Stick, Spacefill (CPK) models. • Augmented reality interface (AR) for visualizing molecular structures. Play "AR VR Molecules Editor" – it’s fun, entertaining and educational!

Verdict
The clearest difference is in-app purchases: Molecules at none against AR VR Molecules Editor Lite's 1. Molecules also leads on ratings volume (166 vs 4). AR VR Molecules Editor Lite's advantage is review sentiment (100% vs 65%) and rating (4.0 vs 3.6). On price, ads and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. AR VR Molecules Editor Lite sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Molecules asks for nothing beyond the download.
AR VR Molecules Editor Lite holds the better App Store score, 4.0 against 3.6. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Molecules has 166 ratings behind it against 4, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 65% of Molecules's written reviews are positive against 100% of AR VR Molecules Editor Lite's.
