Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Couch to 5K® at 4.6 against Run 5k's 3.9. Couch to 5K® also leads on ratings volume (4.7K vs 67) and chart position (#5 vs unranked). Run 5k's advantage is review sentiment (79% vs 66%) and price ($2.99 vs $4.99). On update cadence, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Run 5k costs $2.99 and Couch to 5K® $4.99 up front. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
Couch to 5K® holds the better App Store score, 4.6 against 3.9. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Couch to 5K® has 4.7K ratings behind it against 67, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 79% of Run 5k's written reviews are positive against 66% of Couch to 5K®'s, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Run 5k ships an update every 2 months, Couch to 5K® every 4 months. The most recent releases landed on October 27, 2026 and October 29, 2026 respectively.
