Verdict
The clearest difference is update cadence: Chess.com at weekly against Simple chess board's every 10 months. Chess.com also leads on ratings volume (840K vs 68) and rating (4.8 vs 4.5). Simple chess board's advantage is review sentiment (88% vs 64%) and iOS requirement (12.0 vs 17.0). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Both are free to download. Chess.com sells 12 in-app purchases, starting at $4.99 per month and Simple chess board sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Chess.com holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 4.5. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Chess.com has 840K ratings behind it against 68, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 64% of Chess.com's written reviews are positive against 88% of Simple chess board's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Chess.com ships an update weekly, Simple chess board every 10 months. The most recent releases landed on October 19, 2026 and October 16, 2026 respectively.
