Fluency Tool is a Japanese speaking app. Hear a JLPT sentence, say it out loud, and speech recognition checks what you said. It also teaches you to write kanji by hand, with an offline dictionary and JLPT flashcards. SPEAK JAPANESE OUT LOUD A JLPT-graded sentence plays in a native voice. Your mic opens by itself when playback ends, you repeat the sentence, and your recording plays back so you hear the gap between your Japanese and the model's. Speech recognition grades the attempt: a correct answer moves you on, and a missed sentence comes back later in the same session. SEE WHICH WORD YOU GOT WRONG When the app hears something different, it shows what it heard next to the sentence and marks the word to check. Tap it to hear that word again, then try the whole sentence once more. JAPANESE SHADOWING, ONE SENTENCE AT A TIME Hide the reading or the translation and test yourself before you look. Long-press any word for its dictionary entry without leaving the session. Your first session is 5 sentences; after that you choose the session length and sentence difficulty in Settings. KANJI WRITING PRACTICE WITH STROKE ORDER Open any kanji and tap Practice writing. Watch plays the strokes in order, Trace numbers where each stroke starts, and Write has you draw from memory. The app checks stroke order, direction and shape, then colours each stroke: green when it is right, amber when the shape is right but the order or direction is wrong, red when the shape is off. ALL SCHOOL KANJI, GRADE 1 TO JUNIOR HIGH 2,979 kanji have stroke data, including all 2,136 Joyo kanji: the 1,026 taught in elementary school (grades 1 to 6) and the 1,110 taught in junior high. Browse them by school grade or by JLPT level. Each kanji shows its on'yomi and kun'yomi readings, meanings, stroke count, radical and example words. JAPANESE DICTIONARY THAT WORKS OFFLINE Search more than 45,000 words by English, romaji, kana or kanji. The dictionary is a one-time download of about 21 MB. After that, lookups need no connection. KANJI TOWER (BETA): LEARN KANJI IN SENTENCES A 103-floor course through the 1,026 elementary-school kanji. Each floor takes ten kanji: you meet them, trace them inside real example sentences, then write them from memory. Kanji you have learned come back on a spaced-repetition schedule, so floor 40 still brings back what you wrote on floor 3. JLPT FLASHCARDS WITH SPACED REPETITION SM-2 scheduling. Rate each card Again, Hard, Good or Easy and the next review interval is set from there; you see each interval before you tap. JLPT vocabulary decks for all five levels are preloaded. JLPT GRAMMAR GUIDE, N5 TO N1 Every JLPT grammar pattern in one reference, with native audio on each example sentence and a quiz attached. WHO IT IS FOR Learners who can read Japanese but freeze when they have to say it (roughly N4 to N2). JLPT candidates who want speaking practice next to their exam study. Learners who want to write kanji by hand and not only recognise them, from the first grade-1 kanji to the junior high set. COMMON QUESTIONS Does it check my pronunciation? It checks whether speech recognition heard the sentence you were asked to say, and marks the word it heard differently. It does not grade pitch accent. Does the dictionary work offline? Yes, after its one-time download. Is it useful for JLPT study? Yes, for vocabulary, grammar and kanji organized by exam level. The JLPT has no speaking section, so use the app alongside your exam prep for the speaking ability the test does not measure. Do I need to know kana first? You should be able to read hiragana and katakana; the app does not teach kana. PRICING Everything above is free with no subscription and no trial. A single optional one-time purchase removes ads. Shadowing audio and speech recognition need an internet connection. Flashcards, the dictionary and kanji writing work offline once downloaded. Works on iPhone and iPad.

Verdict
The clearest difference is price: Fluency Tool at Free against AnkiMobile Flashcards's $24.99. Fluency Tool also leads on review sentiment (100% vs 59%) and update cadence (every 5 days vs every 6 weeks). AnkiMobile Flashcards's advantage is rating (4.0 vs 3.0) and in-app purchases (none vs 2). On device support and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Fluency Tool is free to download; AnkiMobile Flashcards costs $24.99 up front. Fluency Tool sells 2 one-off in-app purchases. AnkiMobile Flashcards asks for nothing beyond the download.
AnkiMobile Flashcards holds the better App Store score, 4.0 against 3.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: AnkiMobile Flashcards has 2.4K ratings behind it against 2, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 59% of AnkiMobile Flashcards's written reviews are positive against 100% of Fluency Tool's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
AnkiMobile Flashcards ships an update every 6 weeks, Fluency Tool every 5 days. Both last shipped on November 8, 2026.
