Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: El Universal + at 5.0 against Vanguardia's 4.1. Vanguardia's advantage is in-app purchases (none vs 4) and ads (none vs shown). On price, review sentiment, update cadence and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. El Universal + sells 4 in-app purchases, starting at $0.99 per month. Vanguardia asks for nothing beyond the download.
El Universal + holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.1. Written reviews point the same way: 58% of Vanguardia's written reviews are positive against 63% of El Universal +'s.
Vanguardia ships an update every 2 months, El Universal + every 5 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 5, 2026 and October 19, 2026 respectively.
