Both are free to download. PDI E sells 8 in-app purchases, starting at $3.99 per month. The Japan Times asks for nothing beyond the download.
PDI E holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 4.5. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 127 and 243 respectively. Written reviews complicate that: 16% of PDI E's written reviews are positive against 65% of The Japan Times's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
PDI E ships an update every 7 months, The Japan Times every 9 months. The most recent releases landed on October 23, 2026 and October 24, 2026 respectively.
