Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is review sentiment: Canada's National Observer at 80% against Waterloo Region Record's 10%. Canada's National Observer also leads on in-app purchases (none vs 2) and ads (none vs shown). Waterloo Region Record's advantage is rating (5.0 vs 4.5) and update cadence (fortnightly vs every 2 months). On price, ratings volume and device support there is nothing between them.

Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS

CostPrice · In-app purchases · Ads · Monetization

Both are free to download. Waterloo Region Record sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $14.99 per month. Canada's National Observer asks for nothing beyond the download.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Waterloo Region Record holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.5. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 4 and 11 respectively. Written reviews complicate that: 10% of Waterloo Region Record's written reviews are positive against 80% of Canada's National Observer's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Waterloo Region Record ships an update fortnightly, Canada's National Observer every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on November 1, 2026 and November 3, 2026 respectively.
