Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: PixelWave at 4.8 against Music Theory Chords's 3.3. PixelWave also leads on update cadence (every 4 months vs every 36 months) and ratings volume (19 vs 3). Music Theory Chords's advantage is review sentiment (100% vs 89%). On ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

PixelWave costs $0.99 and Music Theory Chords $1.99 up front. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
PixelWave holds the better App Store score, 4.8 against 3.3. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: PixelWave has 19 ratings behind it against 3, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 89% of PixelWave's written reviews are positive against 100% of Music Theory Chords's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
PixelWave ships an update every 4 months, Music Theory Chords every 36 months. The most recent releases landed on October 24, 2026 and October 29, 2026 respectively.
