Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: RTÉ Player at 4.7 against TVNow's 3.0. RTÉ Player also leads on ratings volume (6.3K vs 2) and review sentiment (46% vs 29%). TVNow's advantage is ads (none vs shown) and monetization model (free vs free with in-app purchases). On price and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
RTÉ Player holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 3.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: RTÉ Player has 6.3K ratings behind it against 2, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 46% of RTÉ Player's written reviews are positive against 29% of TVNow's.
