Verdict
The clearest difference is in-app purchases: RTÉ Player at none against iTV Shows's 6. RTÉ Player also leads on ratings volume (6.3K vs 192) and device support (4 vs 2). iTV Shows's advantage is ads (none vs shown) and update cadence (every 10 days vs every 3 weeks). On price, rating, review sentiment and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. iTV Shows sells 6 in-app purchases, starting at $0.99 per 2 months. RTÉ Player asks for nothing beyond the download.
On the App Store both sit at effectively the same score — 4.7 for RTÉ Player against 4.6 for iTV Shows. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: RTÉ Player has 6.3K ratings behind it against 192, so its average is the more settled of the two. RTÉ Player ships an update every 3 weeks, iTV Shows every 10 days. The most recent releases landed on October 16, 2026 and October 14, 2026 respectively.
