Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is in-app purchases: Open Vehicles at none against OBD2 Car Scanner's 3. Open Vehicles also leads on review sentiment (74% vs 55%) and iOS requirement (12.0 vs 14.0). OBD2 Car Scanner's advantage is rating (4.6 vs 4.2) and ratings volume (5.2K vs 14). On price, ads and device support there is nothing between them.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

OBD2 Car Scanner holds the better App Store score, 4.6 against 4.2. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: OBD2 Car Scanner has 5.2K ratings behind it against 14, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 74% of Open Vehicles's written reviews are positive against 55% of OBD2 Car Scanner's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Open Vehicles ships an update every 4 months, OBD2 Car Scanner every 5 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 21, 2026 and October 25, 2026 respectively.
