Bouky

Bouky keeps the words and passages worth keeping from the books you read on paper. It does not import ebook highlights, and there is no account to sign in to. Photograph a page. Bouky reads it on the device and picks out what you already underlined or highlighted on the paper. Or drag from the first word of a passage to the last, or tap the single words worth keeping. IT ALL WORKS WITHOUT A CONNECTION • The type on the page, read on your phone. • What a word means, in the sense it carried on the page you took it from. • Its translation, into whichever language you have Bouky in. • The title and the author, read off a photograph of the jacket. • The morning page Bouky writes out of the words you kept. • All of it worked out by Apple's own on-device model, so Bouky works on a plane, on the subway, and in a country where you have no data. • A kept word said aloud, in the voice of its book's language. • Nothing is looked up online, and no dictionary has to be downloaded. WHAT IS FREE • Three books on the shelf, without paying. • Photographing pages and reading them. • Keeping words and passages, and what they mean. • Search, tags and favorites. • The home screen widgets. • The whole collection exported as a PDF or as Markdown files. • No advertising anywhere. ON THE SHELF • Your books stand as covers on shelves you name. • Photograph a jacket and the title and the author are read off it. • No barcode to scan and no ISBN to type, so an old book or one printed in another language goes up as easily as a new one. OFF THE PAGE • The page is read once and in full, so one photograph yields as many extracts as you like. • What you underlined or went over with a highlighter is found and selected, one passage after another. • A passage runs from any word to any word, across the ends of lines, in the order the page has them. • Each passage is filed under its chapter, read off the page's own heading. • Page numbers are read out of the margins rather than counted. THE PHOTOGRAPH IS KEPT • A passage is handed back to you as the photograph of the page, with your mark still on it. • Never as retyped text, so the way the book was set is there every time you come back to it. ON YOUR HOME SCREEN • One widget stands a word you kept with what it means, turning morning, midday and evening. • The other stands a passage you kept. • Set either one to your favorites, to one book or to one entry, with a button for another. • No count, no streak, no badge of any kind. FROM ANOTHER APP • A photograph of a page in Photos, in a message or in a browser shares straight into Bouky. • You say which book it came from, and it waits as a page for the next time you open the app. IT COMES BACK OUT • The whole collection as a PDF, set book by book, to print or to send on. • Or as plain Markdown files, one for each book, for Obsidian or any notes app that reads text. • A passage as a picture to post: the photograph with your mark on it, as a story or a square. MEETING A WORD AGAIN • A word you kept before is ruled under in clay when it turns up on a page you are photographing now. WHAT BOUKY COSTS • The shelf beyond three books. • Your library travelling to your other devices through your own iCloud. • The morning page Bouky writes out of the words you kept. • Seven days free on the yearly plan, or one payment for good. • Nothing you have already kept is ever taken away. WHAT IT WILL NEVER DO • No streaks, no reading goals, no daily targets, no scores. • Nothing is ever asked of you, and nothing counts the days. PRIVACY • No account, and no server of ours. • Your library syncs through your own private iCloud database, or stays on the one device. Bouky speaks fifteen languages, and reads and explains in whichever one you have it in. Privacy policy: https://bouky.pwnera.com/privacy Terms of service: https://bouky.pwnera.com/terms
