Verdict
The clearest difference is in-app purchases: Colored Note at none against Color Text Messages's 1. Colored Note also leads on rating (4.7 vs 4.3) and update cadence (weekly vs every 9 months). Color Text Messages's advantage is review sentiment (64% vs 53%) and iOS requirement (8.0 vs 18.0). On price, ratings volume, ads and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Color Text Messages sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Colored Note asks for nothing beyond the download.
Colored Note holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 4.3. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 4.9K and 5K respectively. Written reviews complicate that: 64% of Color Text Messages's written reviews are positive against 53% of Colored Note's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Color Text Messages ships an update every 9 months, Colored Note weekly. Both last shipped on November 6, 2026.
