Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Texas Monthly at 4.7 against FlipHTML5's 3.0. Texas Monthly also leads on ratings volume (2.1K vs 8) and chart position (#166 vs unranked). FlipHTML5's advantage is ads (none vs shown). On price, review sentiment, update cadence and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Texas Monthly sells 10 in-app purchases, starting at $1.99 per month and FlipHTML5 sells 6 in-app purchases, starting at $18.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Texas Monthly holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 3.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Texas Monthly has 2.1K ratings behind it against 8, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews point the same way: 16% of Texas Monthly's written reviews are positive against 15% of FlipHTML5's.
Both ship on a similar rhythm, roughly every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on October 17, 2026 and October 12, 2026 respectively.
