About

Snowpack Report

Features

Most snow reports repeat what the resort put out that morning. This one reports what the instruments measured. Snowpack Report reads the public station networks avalanche forecasters read: the USDA's SNOTEL network and California's CDEC stations in the US, BC's automated snow stations in Canada, the SLF's IMIS stations in Switzerland, and Météo-France's ski-patrol observers in France. It shows you the reading, the station that took it, how far that station sits from the resort, and the time it was read. Ski areas across the US, Canada, Switzerland and France: some have an automated station nearby, many more are read every morning by a COOP observer, and the ones nobody measures say so on their own page rather than showing a zero. FREE, AND USEFUL WITHOUT AN ACCOUNT • Snow depth and overnight snowfall, with the station and observation time on every number • Forecasts for each resort's own coordinates, from the National Weather Service, Environment Canada, MeteoSwiss or Open-Meteo • A map of the resorts you're browsing, each pin carrying its measured depth, with a satellite view • This winter against the resort's own 30-year median, for one resort you save • One snow alert, at any resort • Road surface from the state transport agency's sensor in the pavement of a nearby highway • Parking rules: which resorts need a reservation, on which days, and what it costs • Announced opening dates, with the date we checked them • Inches and feet or centimeters and meters, or each resort in its own country's units • An Apple Watch app with the overnight totals at the resorts you save PREMIUM • Alerts at every resort you save, not just one • Every saved resort tracked against its own 30-year median, all season • Storm Check: what's coming, resort by resort, before you commit to a drive • Cross-pass ranking: where the snow is among the resorts your pass actually covers • Your season, recapped: days, depths and the storms you caught • Offline: the last readings stay readable in the canyon with no bars • Home screen widget and a watch face complication with the overnight numbers WHERE THE NUMBERS COME FROM Snowpack readings are USDA NRCS SNOTEL and California CDEC telemetry and NWS COOP observers in the US, BC's automated snow stations and Environment Canada in Canada, SLF IMIS stations in Switzerland, and Météo-France ski-patrol observers in France. Forecasts are the National Weather Service in the US, Environment Canada in Canada, MeteoSwiss's ICON model in Switzerland and Open-Meteo's blend of weather models in France. Thirty-year medians come from each station's own record, where it goes back that far. Road surface comes from state departments of transportation. Opening dates are the resorts' own announcements, with the date we checked. THE RULES WE HOLD OURSELVES TO A reading we don't have shows as blank, never as zero. Stations sit near mountains, not on them, and every screen says which station and how far. Measured numbers and resort-reported numbers are never mixed. Nothing commercial touches the data. WHAT THIS IS NOT This is not an avalanche forecast, a road closure service, or advice about whether to travel. Check your regional avalanche center, your road conditions service, and the resort before you go. Drive times and leave-by come from Apple Maps, with traffic, from where you are. SUBSCRIPTION Premium Annual and Premium Family (up to six people) both run for a year and renew until cancelled. The Trip Pass runs seven days and does not renew. Prices are shown above and in the app, in your own currency. Payment is charged to your Apple ID, and a renewing subscription can be cancelled any time in Settings.
