Can you list your top five most important values? As we go about our daily lives, it's all too easy to go through the motions without ever taking time to examine and clarify our personal values. Making decisions based on our values allows us to live lives with more meaning and purpose. This evidence-based activity is proven to change your mood and improve your outlook. All it requires is your careful attention and honest responses. We highly recommend doing this activity as a family or with a spouse or partner. We also recommend doing it at least once a year to see what has changed for you. This is especially true if you are a teenager or a young adult. This exercise is based on research conducted by William Miller, Janet C'de Baca, Daniel Matthews, and Paula Wilbourne and is used by therapists, career counselors, teachers, etc., all over the world.

Before making your selection, think about when you were particularly pleased or happy, what was behind this good feeling? Which value was fulfilled? Also remember when you were angry or disappointed, perhaps when someone behaved in a certain way. Then a value was probably violated, which one? Sometimes there are also conflicts of values. This happens when two values compete with each other. If you know your own important values, you can better understand why you behave in a certain way in certain situations and even deduce what good decisions you can make to achieve a better quality of life and live more according to your values.
