Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Echo at 5.0 against Essential Emotions +'s 4.3. Essential Emotions +'s advantage is ratings volume (27 vs 2) and device support (4 vs 1). On price, ads, in-app purchases and monetization model there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Essential Emotions + sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $4.99 per month and Echo sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $9.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Echo holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.3. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Essential Emotions + has 27 ratings behind it against 2, so its average is the more settled of the two.
