Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Math Joy at 4.4 against Main Idea's 3.8. Main Idea's advantage is review sentiment (71% vs 33%) and update cadence (every 3 months vs every 28 months). On price, ratings volume, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Math Joy sells 1 one-off in-app purchase and Main Idea sells 3 one-off in-app purchases. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.
Math Joy holds the better App Store score, 4.4 against 3.8. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 11 and 19 respectively. Written reviews complicate that: 33% of Math Joy's written reviews are positive against 71% of Main Idea's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Math Joy ships an update every 28 months, Main Idea every 3 months. The most recent releases landed on November 6, 2026 and November 2, 2026 respectively.
