About

Walkability

Features

Walking should be safe and enjoyable for everyone. When it isn’t, we walk less and lose the health, social, environmental, and economic benefits associated with living in more walkable places. The Walkability app allows citizens of all ages and abilities to share their walking experiences. This provides valuable insights to help communities and responsible authorities understand walkable places and identify areas that need further improvement to make walking better for everyone.  Walk21 Foundation, a UK charity, works globally to create safe, accessible, and welcoming places for people to walk. Since 2017, Walk21 has been supported by CEDEUS, GIZ, Alstom Foundation, and others, to develop tools that help make a positive impact. Special thanks to Alstom, the Municipality of Lisbon, and EIT Climate-KIC for their support with creating the Walkability app. The Walkability App runs on the SPOTTERON Citizen Science platform.

About

WayAhead

Features

Know every slope before you go. WayAhead analyses walking and wheelchair routes for steepness, step-free access, and distance — then colour-codes them on the map so you can judge whether a route is safe and comfortable before you set out. HOW IT WORKS Plan a route by entering an address or long-pressing on the map. WayAhead analyses elevation every 5 metres along the path and paints each segment green (easy), yellow (challenging), or red (steep). You'll see total distance, maximum slope, elevation gain and loss, a colour-distance breakdown, and an overall success score — all at a glance. PERSONALISED FOR YOU During onboarding, tell WayAhead how you move — manual wheelchair, electric wheelchair, or walking — and how far you can travel without a rest. The app tailors slope thresholds and recommends pauses before steep or long sections so you can plan with confidence. WHEELCHAIR-AWARE ROUTING WayAhead uses dedicated wheelchair routing to avoid stairs, high kerbs, and impassable barriers. Need a completely step-free route? Toggle barrier-free mode and every obstacle is routed around automatically. KEY FEATURES • Traffic-light slope overlay — green, yellow, red on every segment • Slope analysis every 5 metres with 0.1 m elevation precision • Explore hiking trails and city walks across 33 countries • Trail slope analysis with the same traffic-light system • Step-free and barrier-free routing • Personalised by mobility type and stamina • Automatic pause recommendations before steep sections • Save and revisit your favourite routes with full stats • Alternative route comparison — pick the safest option • Works worldwide — plan routes in any country • Available in 16 languages WHO IS IT FOR? WayAhead is built for anyone who needs to understand terrain before they travel: – Manual and electric wheelchair users – People who walk but avoid steep hills or stairs – Older adults with limited stamina – Parents with strollers or pushchairs – Travellers with heavy luggage WayAhead is NOT a car, cycling, or public-transport navigator.
