Spend some time with the Odyssey. Skald brings together 24 translations in 11 languages, the original Ancient Greek, 3,285 reading notes, 258 historical artworks and objects, including 229 from 47 museums and collections, and references to 52 journal articles. Open a translation and explore this library alongside the poem. A word can lead you to an ancient custom, a different translation, a painting, or a scholar's reading of the scene. Follow it for a minute or settle in for an hour. The poem will be there when you come back. Read, and read again Choose from 13 English translations and editions in French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Hebrew and Modern Greek. Keep the Ancient Greek beside your reading and tap a word for the Homeric lexicon. Compare how translators handle the same passage, with notes on their choices. There is more here than you are likely to explore in one reading. Try a second translation, or a third. Different wording brings different details into focus, and fresh notes can surface as you reread or switch translations. Spend time with the people around the poem The Odyssey has kept readers, artists and scholars company for centuries. Their work can bring us closer to ancient lives: how people welcomed a stranger, shared a meal, built a boat, or waited for someone to come home. Skald gathers these connections where you can read them with the story. Explore the art and scholarship Open paintings, prints and ancient objects with their collection, source and rights details. Follow references to 52 journal articles; 40 have direct full-text links to follow online. Other articles have a citation and DOI link. The notes also explore Greek words, recurring phrases, translation choices, places and everyday life. Find your way through Read all 24 books in a full translation, or start with a short retelling at one of three depths, labeled 1, 5 and 20 minutes. Follow the voyage map, keep track of the fleet, and look up people and places as you go. Your saved passage and preferences stay in app storage. The bundled text, notes, maps and art work offline; external sources and article links need a connection. Books I, II and IX are free. One purchase unlocks the other 21 books, including their translations, notes and art. A student or teacher price is available on your own attestation. No subscription or Skald account is required. Skald displays no ads in the reader. The Odyssey includes monsters, battles, deaths and other dangers. Skald is for adults and parent-led reading.
