BirdTrace is a privacy-focused bird identification, recording, and exploration app built for birdwatchers and bird photographers. Identify birds on your device, explore 11,171 species worldwide, use geographic context to make identification more relevant to your location, and discover how bird populations change throughout the year with BirdTrace’s 52-week global migration atlas. PRIVATE, ON-DEVICE BIRD IDENTIFICATION BirdTrace uses an advanced on-device recognition model covering 10,480 bird classes. Bird identification is performed locally on your device. Your bird photos do not need to be uploaded to a remote AI service for recognition. This also means bird identification can continue to work when you are offline — useful when birding in forests, wetlands, mountains, reserves, and other places with poor network coverage. LOCATION-AWARE IDENTIFICATION Birds are not equally likely to occur everywhere. With location permission, BirdTrace can combine visual recognition with geographic context to prioritize species that are more relevant to where the photo was taken. This helps make identification results more useful in real-world birding situations without moving the recognition model to the cloud. GLOBAL BIRDDEX Explore BirdDex with 11,171 bird species from around the world. Browse common names, scientific names, conservation information, distribution-related content, and other species information designed for birdwatchers and photographers. GLOBAL 52-WEEK MIGRATION ATLAS BirdTrace 3.0 introduces a new global bird migration atlas. Explore modeled seasonal distributions across all 52 weeks of the year and watch how population-level ranges change through breeding, migration, non-breeding, resident, and review-required periods. Migration data can be downloaded by species and stored locally for later reuse. The atlas represents modeled population distributions rather than individual GPS tracking routes. OFFLINE-FRIENDLY BY DESIGN Core bird identification runs on-device. Downloaded migration data is stored locally for reuse, allowing BirdTrace to remain useful even when network access is limited. PERSONAL BIRD RECORDS Save your sightings with photos, locations, dates, species information, and field notes to gradually build your own birding history. NEARBY DISCOVERY Explore birds that may occur around your current location and discover species relevant to where you are birding. IUCN CONSERVATION INFORMATION View IUCN conservation status information to better understand the conservation situation of the birds you encounter. CULTURE & STORIES Selected species also include stories about their connections with history, folklore, culture, religion, and human traditions. BUILT FOR BIRD LOVERS BirdTrace began from bird photography and a fascination with observing birds in the field. Its goal is to bring private bird identification, global species exploration, personal records, geographic intelligence, and seasonal migration discovery together in one app.
