*NOTICE - TRY BEFORE YOU BUY* - Play the beginning for free. A one-time in-app purchase unlocks the full game. No ads. **Minimalist Style, Maximum Strategy** Golden Lap is a minimalist take on the racing strategy genre, with an intuitive UI that displays only essential information and makes it clear what each decision means – though it won’t make the decisions themselves any easier! The amount of options and information involved in motorsport can be overwhelming for someone not familiar with it. Golden Lap cuts out the micromanagement and lets you focus on the big picture, with depth where it matters. The Golden Era of open-wheel racing is about to begin. Do you have what it takes to lead an iconic team through one of the most exciting decades of motorsport history? As the head of a team, you'll make pivotal decisions that shape the destiny of your drivers and the performance of your cars. Allocate your budget wisely across drivers, support staff, car development, and sponsorships to gain an edge over the competition. Manage big personalities to get the most out of every member of your team. But don’t forget – racing in this era is unpredictable and intense. Golden Lap is no ordinary motorsport management game. Safety measures are improving, but accidents can happen. Car technology is advancing in leaps and bounds. You aren’t racing spreadsheets, and there’s no such thing as a guaranteed win – which makes victory all the sweeter. **Lead Your Team To Pole Position** Every season is an opportunity to etch your name in racing history. Whether you're turning a back-marker team into a championship contender or taking on the pressure of maintaining a dynasty, your decisions between races and championships will be the key to your legacy. Hire the right crew, develop your cars, make the right calls on race day, and meet your sponsors’ goals. All while making sure not to go broke! **Your Legacy Awaits** Build a winning team with drivers, a head engineer and a crew chief. Every hire comes with rich personality traits that affect everything from finances to car performance and skill behind the wheel. A driver with rich parents may look like they’ve saved your team by helping out with money - until they turn out to be a party animal and cost you the championship by showing up tired on race day. Your head engineer might bring down the rest of your team with their grumpy attitude, but if they’re a magician with a wrench it might be worth it? Only you can judge what your team needs. Lead your team, choose a strategy, and build a legend!

Engine Simulator is a physics-based piston engine sandbox. The sound and motion come from a real rigid body simulation of the crank, pistons, valves, and combustion, not recordings. Start an engine, work the throttle, and tune its fuel and ignition maps in the ECU. Build one from scratch (layout, bore, stroke, cam, firing order) or describe what you want and have it generated on device. Watch it run in 3D, read live power and torque on the dyno, or push it past the limiter until it breaks. Post your engines to the global leaderboard and compare against other builders. Engine Simulator for iOS is an unofficial port. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or supported by AngeTheGreat (Ange Yaghi), the creator of the original open source Engine Simulator. Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is update cadence: Golden Lap at daily against Engine Simulator's every 3 weeks. Golden Lap also leads on rating (4.7 vs 4.3) and iOS requirement (15.0 vs 18.6). Engine Simulator's advantage is review sentiment (79% vs 62%) and chart position (#47 vs #169). On price, ratings volume, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Golden Lap sells 1 one-off in-app purchase and Engine Simulator sells 1 one-off in-app purchase. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Golden Lap holds the better App Store score, 4.7 against 4.3. Both are backed by a comparable volume of ratings — 97 and 127 respectively. Written reviews complicate that: 62% of Golden Lap's written reviews are positive against 79% of Engine Simulator's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Golden Lap ships an update daily, Engine Simulator every 3 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 17, 2026 and October 18, 2026 respectively.
