Scan a comic, know what you are holding, and keep track of every issue you own. VerseDB is free to use, with no limit on how many comics you track. Scan the barcode Point your camera at a comic and it is in your collection in seconds. VerseDB reads the extra digits printed beside the barcode, which are what tell issue 3 of a run from issue 30, so a scan lands on the exact issue rather than the series. Scan a stack in one go and confirm each book before it is added. No barcode? Scan or upload the cover and Pro's cover recognition finds the issue. Scan also tells you when a comic is already in your collection. Your last 12 scans stay a tap away under Recent scans. Photograph a CGC, CBCS, PGX or PSA slab and Pro fills in the grader, grade and cert number for a graded copy. Know what is worth something First appearances, deaths and origins are flagged on the issue itself, so a long box stops hiding its best books. See what your whole collection is worth, free. With Pro, see estimated values low, mid and high, prices by grade, values by variant cover, and graded census data. Pro also charts your collection's market value over time and suggests a value for each copy at its grade. Stop buying it twice Check what you already own while you are standing at the back issue bins, and see which issues are still missing from the runs you collect. If you have been keeping your collection in a spreadsheet, this replaces it. Widgets, Apple Watch and Siri Your pull list on your wrist, with a complication for the watch face. Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets for iPhone and iPad. Ask Siri what your next release is, whether you own an issue, or to add a series to your pull list. Your series turn up in Spotlight too. Never miss new comic day Browse upcoming releases week by week, filter by publisher or format, and add a series to your pull list with one tap. Live crowdfunding campaigns show up on the series, issues and publishers they belong to, with a screen of every campaign that's live. The whole catalog Over 1 million issues, 154,000 series, 168,000 characters and 87,000 creators from 9,800 publishers, major and independent. Western comics, manga, manhwa, manhua and bande dessinée, from single issues to omnibuses. Series pages show manga serialization and every series a magazine ran. Track your reading Mark an issue read with one tap, work through a run or a crossover, and set a reading goal for the year. Each series you read gets its own stats, and Pro adds your year in review. Lists, reviews and collectors Build your own lists, keep a wishlist of what you are hunting with its order cutoffs and release dates, and browse reading orders from other collectors. Rate any issue from half a star to five and see what people thought before starting a new series. Like and discuss what other collectors are up to in the community feed. Find a comic shop 5,000 shops across 31 countries on a map, with hours, directions and the ones you save. Plus comic cons near you, and podcasts worth following. What Pro adds Market values by issue and grade, collection and reading statistics, smart lists that build themselves, cover recognition, and the VerseAI assistant. Everything above is free. Built by collectors, because the details matter: the variant cover, the first appearance, the issue you still need. Point your camera at a bookshelf. Book Catalog reads the spines and adds up to 40 books in one pass. Every other book app makes you scan barcodes one at a time. That is why people who own 400 books never finish cataloguing them. Book Catalog takes a photo of the whole shelf, recognises the spines on your device, and hands you a review list where you confirm the matches before anything is saved. A 500 book library is about 13 shelf photos. One afternoon. SCAN A WHOLE SHELF Photograph one shelf and get a list of what is on it, with a cover, title and author for each spine. Every match shows a confidence, and anything the camera was unsure about is flagged for you to check rather than guessed at. You approve the list, then the books are added. Recognition runs entirely on your device and the photo never leaves your phone. Prefer one at a time? Scan an ISBN barcode, search by title or author, or type a book in by hand. All of it is free and unlimited. BUILT FOR PEOPLE WHO OWN THE BOOKS Most reading apps stop at a star rating. Book Catalog tracks the copy on your shelf: First edition and printing number Dust jacket present Condition, graded Fine through Poor Signed copies Provenance notes Purchase price and date Estimated value, and a running total for the whole collection Print an insurance inventory as a PDF with cover thumbnails, ISBNs, conditions and valuations, suitable for a homeowner's policy rider. Values are your own estimates and the document says so plainly. NEVER BUY THE SAME BOOK TWICE Book Catalog warns you at the moment you add a book you already own, and tells you which copy it collides with. It knows the difference between a second copy of the same edition, which is usually a mistake, and a different edition of the same work, which for a collector is often the point. There is a duplicates report for the whole library too. BRING YOUR LIBRARY WITH YOU Import a Goodreads or StoryGraph export, or any CSV, and keep your ratings, shelves and read dates. Import is free and unlimited, because a catalogue you cannot move into is no use to anyone. Export back out to CSV whenever you like. Your library is yours. TRACK THE READING TOO Shelves for read, reading, want to read and your wishlist, plus any custom shelves you want Reading progress by page or percent, with a session log An annual reading goal that shows whether you are on pace and by how much Streaks, pages per day, genre breakdown, and a year in books Saved quotes with page references A lending tracker for the books you have lent out and the ones you have borrowed Everything is stored on your device. Sign in to iCloud and it syncs privately to your other devices. There is no account, no sign up, and no server of ours holding your library. ACCESSIBLE BY DESIGN Full Dynamic Type support up to the largest accessibility sizes, VoiceOver labels on every book and every scan result, and status shown with a symbol and a label rather than colour alone. The camera is optional: manual entry and import cover everything. FREE AND PRO Free, with no limit: unlimited books, barcode scanning, manual entry, shelves, reading progress, statistics, the annual goal, iCloud sync, and Goodreads, StoryGraph and CSV import. Shelf Scan is free three times a day. BOOK CATALOG PRO Pro unlocks unlimited shelf scanning, the collector fields and collection valuation, the duplicates report, advanced statistics, and CSV and insurance PDF export. Pro is available as a weekly or yearly auto-renewable subscription, or as a one time purchase. Subscriptions auto-renew until canceled. Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: VerseDB at 5.0 against Book Catalog's 1.0. VerseDB also leads on ratings volume (6 vs 1). Book Catalog's advantage is in-app purchases (none vs 2) and ads (none vs shown). On price, monetization model, device support and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.
Scored on Price · Rating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings · Update frequency · Ads · In-app purchases · Monetization · Best chart rank · Devices · Requires iOS
Both are free to download. VerseDB sells 2 in-app purchases, starting at $6.00 per month. Book Catalog asks for nothing beyond the download.
VerseDB holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 1.0. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: VerseDB has 6 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two.
