About

CieliBlu

Have you ever looked up at the sky, seen a plane with a long white trail behind it and wondered which plane it was, and why some trails last only a few seconds while others stay visible for hours? CieliBlu helps you find out, and lets you contribute a real observation to a citizen science project on aircraft contrails. HOW IT WORKS β€’ Point your phone at the plane you see in the sky. β€’ CieliBlu works out the direction you're looking in using the compass and tilt, and compares it with real-time flight data (FlyItalyADSB ADS-B network) to identify the plane in front of you. β€’ Choose what you see behind the plane: no contrail, a short contrail or a persistent contrail. β€’ Take a photo: CieliBlu enriches it with the data of the identified aircraft (callsign, altitude, speed, heading and distance). After the search, the aircraft's position updates automatically and a crosshair helps you follow it. β€’ The app automatically retrieves the air temperature and humidity right at the aircraft's flight altitude: key data for understanding the conditions in which persistent contrails form. WHY IT MATTERS Persistent contrails can turn into thin clouds (contrail cirrus) that stay in the sky for hours, with a possible effect on the heat balance of the atmosphere. Real observations from the field are needed to better understand when and where this happens: every observation you record with CieliBlu is added to a shared archive, which can also be browsed on the project's website and is available to anyone who is curious or wants to study the phenomenon. WHAT YOU GET β€’ A personal history of all your observations, with outcome, photos and weather data. β€’ The ability to review and correct your saved observations. β€’ A simple, immediate way to learn to recognize the planes flying over your town. CIELIBLU PRO With the optional CieliBlu Pro in-app purchase you get: β€’ No ads. β€’ A wider aircraft search cone and radius (up to Β±30Β° and 200 km, compared with Β±15Β° and 100 km in the free version), useful in very busy skies or when visibility is poor. β€’ Advanced history filters (by date, observed outcome, aircraft callsign/ICAO24) and filtered CSV export of your data. PRIVACY CieliBlu asks for access to the camera, motion sensors and location only to identify the plane you are watching and to link the observation to the correct coordinates and altitude. The location data sent can be made less precise in the settings. CieliBlu is designed for anyone curious about the sky above their head: aviation and weather enthusiasts, teachers, students and anyone who wants to contribute to a citizen science project with a small everyday gesture. SUBSCRIPTIONS CieliBlu Pro is available as an auto-renewing monthly or annual subscription. Payment is charged to your Apple ID at confirmation of purchase. The subscription renews automatically unless it is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period; you can manage or cancel it in your App Store account settings.
