Bean turns your health into a fitness game. Walk, run, or bike in the real world. Your quests get crushed, your character levels up, and rewards roll in. "Cute outfits and I love the overlay." (App Store review) DAILY QUESTS Every day brings three quest tiers (Easy, Normal, Hard) for walking, running, and biking: 5,000, 10,000, or 15,000 steps for walking, 1.5, 3, or 6 miles for running, and 3, 9.5, or 18.5 miles for biking. Kilometers if you prefer: 2.5, 5, or 10 for running and 5, 15, or 30 for biking. Complete them to earn Beans and XP. Everything comes from Apple Health, so there is nothing extra to track. KEEP YOUR STARS UP Your buddy has a star bar of up to 7 stars. Finish a Normal or Hard quest and you gain a star. Finish only Easy and you hold the stars you have. Finish nothing and you lose one. Keep 3 or more for 1.5x Beans on quests, or fill all 7 for 2x. YOUR CHARACTER Play as Bean or Pea, two pixel-art buddies you can switch between any time. Dress them in hats, hair, eyewear, face items, tops, bottoms, backgrounds, pets, and effects. Every item is bought outright with Beans, so you always pick exactly what you want. No pulls, no luck-only walls. MISSIONS Limited-time events with a ladder of daily movement goals. Every stage you reach unlocks a cosmetic you keep for good. COMPETE Start or join a walking, running, or biking challenge with friends, pick how long it runs, and see who moves the most. Free to enter, no stakes. FARM Team up with friends on a shared farm of up to 30 members. Pool your Beans to unlock land, and every plot you unlock boosts the Beans everyone earns from quests. Spend the pool on animals, decorations, and ground tiles, and lay them out together. FRIENDS Add friends and see how your weekly and monthly records compare. CAPTURE A YEAR IN ONE SECOND Record a 1-second moment from your favorite part of the day and stitch them into a highlight reel anytime. Your moments are backed up to your account, and the friends you add can watch them. WIDGETS Keep your buddy and today's quest progress on your Home Screen and Lock Screen. FREE TO DOWNLOAD, NO SUBSCRIPTION Bean is free to download, with no subscription and no trial to cancel. Quests, missions, challenges, friends, farms, and widgets are all free. You earn Beans by finishing quests, finding Bean in the daily puzzle, and watching optional ads. If you want more, optional Bean Packs are one-time purchases: 60 Beans for $1.99, 170 for $4.99, 375 for $9.99, 800 for $19.99, or 2,200 for $49.99 (US prices). WHAT MAKES IT BEAN. A character to dress. Friends to compare with. A one-second clip to capture. A star bar you would rather not break. The little hooks that make you actually want to lace up again tomorrow.

Mettle is a free walking game where your steps are your weapon. Join a squad with your friends, take on monsters together, and level up as a team. Every real-world step you take deals damage, and every monster you defeat earns coins to recruit new heroes, like the mage, swordsman, archer and bard. Walk more, and your heroes level up and hit harder. How it works: - Pick your starting hero. When you walk in real life, your hero deals damage to monsters. - Join or create a squad and fight side by side with friends, wherever they are. - Take on a weekly expedition: a new monster every day and a boss every Sunday. - Go on hunts: forays and bounties with 47+ monsters, solo or with your squad. - Level up your squad to unlock emblems, banners, more members and tougher monsters. - Join the Weekly World Raid, where every player fights one giant boss together. - Add friends and challenge them to step duels. - Steps sync from Apple Health and hit the monster automatically, even while the app is closed. - Collect heroes across 24 lines, feed them XP from your walking, and evolve them into rarer forms. - Climb the leaderboard for today, this week, this month and all time. - No ads. Just you, your friends and a lot of walking! Note from the creator: Hey, I’m Daniel, and I built Mettle to motivate my family and friends to walk more and stay active. The first week of testing was a complete success. Everyone was hooked and genuinely making an effort to walk more to defeat the monsters together, level up their heroes, and climb the leaderboard. I designed and built Mettle entirely on my own. My goal now is to share it with any group that wants to stay active together. Happy walking!

Verdict
The clearest difference is in-app purchases: Mettle at none against Bean's 10. Mettle also leads on ads (none vs shown) and ratings volume (32 vs 6). Bean's advantage is review sentiment (100% vs 79%) and rating (5.0 vs 4.7). On price, update cadence, device support and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.
