BirdTrace is a privacy-focused bird identification, recording, and exploration app built for birdwatchers and bird photographers. Identify birds on your device and explore 11,171 BirdDex entries worldwide. Discover their classification, conservation status, seasonal distributions, and cultural stories, while building your own history of encounters. PRIVATE, ON-DEVICE IDENTIFICATION BirdTrace’s on-device recognition model covers 10,480 bird classes. Identification runs locally, without uploading your photos to a remote AI service. Automatic bird detection helps locate your subject. When a photo contains multiple birds, choose the individual to identify or use the full photo. Core identification works offline, including in forests, wetlands, mountains, and places with limited connectivity. GEOGRAPHIC AND SEASONAL CONTEXT Birds occur in different places at different times of year. With location permission, BirdTrace can combine visual recognition with geographic and seasonal context to prioritize candidates relevant to your observation. GLOBAL BIRDDEX Browse 11,171 entries with Chinese and English names, scientific names, biological classification, species introductions, distribution-related information, and IUCN conservation status. BirdDex and the recognition model have different coverage: the encyclopedia lets you explore beyond the model’s 10,480 recognition classes. GLOBAL 52-WEEK MIGRATION ATLAS Explore modeled bird population distributions with an annual playback timeline and interactive maps offering a 3D view. Consistent map and timeline colors distinguish breeding, migration, non-breeding, and resident phases. Unassigned phases appear in yellow, with spatial-review notices shown separately. Search supported species by Chinese name, English name, or scientific name. Download migration data by species and retain it for offline viewing. Clear downloaded migration data in Settings to free storage; cleared maps must be downloaded again for offline use. The atlas shows modeled population distributions, not GPS tracking routes of individual birds. 1,378 BILINGUAL CULTURAL STORIES Discover connections between birds and mythology, folklore, literature, religion, art, and history. From Odin’s ravens to birds in poetry and local traditions, every story is available in Chinese and English. References follow each story, with concise notes where needed to explain versions, cultural context, or species associations. BIRD CARDS WITH YOUR PHOTOS Tap the top-right Share button in a BirdDex entry to automatically create a bird poster. Each card features a photo, Chinese and English names, the Latin scientific name, classification from kingdom to species, and a brief introduction. Cards use accessible high-quality photos, with crop controls to frame your subject. Save your card to Photos or send it through available apps such as WeChat and Telegram using the system share sheet. PERSONAL BIRD RECORDS Save sightings with photos, dates, locations, species information, and field notes. Build your birdwatching history and preserve memorable photographic encounters. NEARBY DISCOVERY Explore birds that may occur around your current location and find inspiration for your next observation. CONSERVATION INFORMATION View IUCN conservation status to learn more about the conservation circumstances of the birds you encounter. BirdTrace began with a love of bird photography and observing birds in the field. It brings on-device identification, global species exploration, personal records, migration discovery, and cultural storytelling together in one app. Core identification works offline. Initial retrieval of online information, migration-data downloads, and retrieval of iCloud-backed photos require an internet connection. Discover birds—and the stories behind them.
