Totality
Read full descriptionHide full description
On 12 August 2026, the moon's shadow sweeps across Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain โ the first total solar eclipse over mainland Europe since 1999. Inside a narrow band, day turns to night, stars come out, and the sun's corona blazes around a black moon. A few kilometres outside that band, none of it happens. Totality tells you precisely which side of that line you are standing on. POINT YOUR PHONE AT THE SKY An augmented-reality overlay draws the sun and moon onto the live view in front of you, with their paths, the horizon, and the compass laid over the real sky. You can see exactly where the eclipse will happen before it happens โ and pick your spot accordingly. EXACT TIMES FOR EXACTLY WHERE YOU ARE Eclipse circumstances are computed for your precise coordinates, not your city: โข First contact, totality begins, maximum, totality ends, last contact โ to the second โข How much of the sun is covered, and for how long โข The compass bearing to face, and how high the sun will sit THE LOW-SUN PROBLEM Over Spain the sun is only 3โ12ยฐ above the horizon during totality โ nearly setting. A hill, a tree line, or a building in the wrong direction will cost you the entire event. Totality shows you the bearing and the sun's height so you can find a clear horizon in advance, rather than discovering the problem on the day. WORKS WITH NO SIGNAL Every calculation runs on your iPhone, offline, from a bundled astronomical ephemeris. In a field in Asturias with no bars, everything still works. This matters: the one moment the app is most needed is the moment you are least likely to have a connection. NO ACCOUNT NEEDED Every feature works without signing in โ including on eclipse day, with no signal. FREE, WITH AN OPTIONAL PASS The countdown, whether the eclipse is total where you stand, the coverage percentage and the AR sky view are free โ always. The Eclipse Pass, a single $1.99 payment, unlocks the numbers you need on the day: contact times to the second, how long totality lasts, which way to face, and how high the sun will sit. ENGLISH AND SPANISH Fully localized end to end โ Spain is in the path. SAFETY Never look at the sun without certified ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses, except during the brief seconds of full totality. Totality helps you plan; it cannot protect your eyes. No subscription, no ads, no tracking, no analytics.

Will you actually see totality from where you will be standing? Most eclipse apps answer that with a computed guess. This one answers it with the data. Inside Spain, Eclipse publishes the verdict from the Instituto Geografico Nacional for every municipality. That matters more than it sounds. A textbook calculation puts Madrid just inside the path of totality. The IGN puts it outside, at 99.90 percent. An app that says otherwise gets proven wrong in public, on the day. THREE ECLIPSES, ONE APP 2 August 2027 is the big one: totality runs from southern Spain across Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt, where Luxor gets 6 minutes 23 seconds, the longest over land in decades. 26 January 2028 is an annular eclipse, the ring of fire, and it crosses Spain at sunset with the Sun only a few degrees above the horizon. Both are already in the app. It moves to the next one on its own, with no update needed. WHAT YOU GET - A straight answer for your exact place. Total, annular, partial, or right on the limit. When your spot sits on the edge, the app says so instead of guessing, and names the nearest town that is safely inside. - Every contact time to the second, in the local time of the place you asked about. - Which way to look. A live compass points you at the right patch of sky, with the Sun's exact height above the horizon so you can check today that no building or ridge is in the way. - Times clipped to sunset. Where an eclipse ends below the horizon, showing a time you cannot observe is worse than showing nothing. - Cloud cover for your spot, from Apple Weather, so you know whether to drive. - Alerts before each phase, scheduled on your device. - The full path map, with the centre line and both limits. WORKS WITH NO SIGNAL Everything except the cloud forecast runs entirely on your device. No account, no server, no connection. On eclipse day, when everyone opens their eclipse app in the same few minutes, that is the difference between an answer and a spinning wheel. NOTHING IS COLLECTED No tracking, no analytics, no account. Your location never leaves your phone. The only network request is Apple's own weather service. SAFETY FIRST Never look at the Sun without certified ISO 12312-2 filters. An annular eclipse has no safe moment at all: even a perfect ring is direct sunlight. The app says so, and never tells you to remove your glasses unless you are genuinely inside totality. Data: Instituto Geografico Nacional (CNIG), NASA/Fred Espenak, GeoNames.

Verdict
The clearest difference is in-app purchases: Solar Eclipse at none against Totality's 1. On price, ads, device support and iOS requirement there is nothing between them.
