Stud Finder App
This tool uses your phone's magnetometer to detect metal objects within walls, such as nails, screws, pipes, and rebar. It offers different modes for finding studs or larger metal objects and can even overlay stud locations on your camera view in augmented reality.
- Magnetometer-based stud and metal detection
- Multiple scan modes (Stud, Metal, Deep Scan Pro)
- Augmented reality wall view (Pro)
- Haptic and sound alerts
- Live field strength readings
- Calibration to your environment
- Save and review past scans

Find the stud before you drill. Stud Finder turns your iPhone's built-in magnetometer into a magnetic stud finder. It picks up the steel nails and screws that hold drywall to the studs, and warns you about the pipes, rebar and conduit you don't want to hit. Lay your phone flat on the wall, let it calibrate, then slide it slowly. The gauge climbs as you get closer to metal, and the scanner lights up, beeps and buzzes when it finds something. THREE SCAN MODES Stud Mode: Tuned for the small, brief signal of a nail or screw. Follow the line of fasteners to find the stud. Metal Mode: Less sensitive, so only larger metal like pipes, plates and steel studs stands out. A line of nails won't set it off, so you can tell a fastener from a pipe. Deep Scan (Pro): The most sensitive mode, for fasteners set deeper in the wall that Stud Mode can pass right over. WALL VIEW (PRO) Found one stud? Point your camera at the wall and Wall View draws a line on it in AR, then marks where the next studs should be at your stud spacing: 16 or 24 inches, or 40 or 60 cm. Slide your phone onto a predicted line to check it, and tap to confirm. Predicted lines are estimates. Doubled studs around doors, windows and corners can break the pattern, so check each one with the scanner before you drill. FEATURES • Calibrates against your own wall, so readings fit the room • Live field strength in microtesla (µT) or milligauss (mG) • Low, normal and high sensitivity • Haptic and sound alerts: one beep for a possible stud, three for metal • Save scans and look back at them later • Keep the screen awake while you scan • A step-by-step guide that walks you through hanging a shelf, from the first stud to the last screw • Available in 13 languages FREE AND PRO Stud Mode, Metal Mode and calibration are free. The free plan includes 3 scans of up to a minute each. After that, watch a short ad for another scan, as often as you like. You can keep up to 5 saved scans. Stud Finder Pro adds: • Deep Scan • Wall View • Unlimited scans with no time limit and no ads • Unlimited saved scans If your plan starts with a free trial, we'll remind you two days before it ends. HOW IT WORKS, AND WHAT IT CAN'T DO We want you to know exactly what you're getting. Your phone's magnetometer senses magnetic fields, so it detects ferrous metal: steel nails, screws, pipes, rebar and conduit. Wood isn't magnetic, and no phone can detect it directly. Stud Finder finds studs the way a magnetic stud finder does, by finding the metal fasteners holding them in place. That's why the app reports what it finds by signal strength instead of claiming to identify materials. If a reading in Stud Mode is unusually strong, it tells you it's likely metal rather than a stud. Results depend on your device's magnetometer, the wall material and how deep the metal is. Detection is less reliable through thick plaster, tile, concrete or metal lath. Always check before you drill, and never rely on any app alone where there may be electrical wiring or plumbing. SUBSCRIPTIONS Payment is charged to your Apple ID when you confirm your purchase. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
