Glitchforge

Glitchforge is a video glitch studio that runs on your iPhone. Load a clip, stack effects, and watch your videos get messed up. Most glitch apps just paint effects on top of the picture. We edit the compressed video itself, in its own domain: the motion vectors, coefficients, and quantizers inside the H.264, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4 streams. Datamosh: motion comes unstuck from the picture, so one shot melts into the next and frames bleed together. Scrambled coefficients: blocks tear and smear. Warped blocks + posterization: the compression math is the effect. VHS + analog: tracking noise, color bleed, worn tape Pixel sort: pixels dragged into long streaks of color. Load a clip. Build a chain and reorder it if you need to. Tune each effect's settings and watch the picture change in unexpected ways. Scrub to any frame and save it, or export the whole clip. There is no account and no server. Your footage is processed on the phone and stays there. It works with no connection, anywhere you are ready to make art.

Press the power button and a self-test types itself out, a logo and a progress bar go by, and a blue desktop fades in. Open the camera and a modem sings while a "Connecting to camera device" window fills up. After that, it is just a camera. ■ Three lenses · Digicam 640×480 — warm color, soft focus, an orange date burned into the corner · Camcorder DV — scanlines and color bleed, REC and a running timecode on screen · Webcam 320×240 — cool, grainy, low resolution ■ Also in the box · A light-leak switch for one more layer of that era · Photos save as JPEG, video saves as MP4 with sound · My Pictures, Trash and Settings, all in windows from back then · Shutter, film advance and every dialog chime, made to sound like the year 2000 · Stamp your photos with the year 2000 if you like ■ Your photos stay on your device No account, no sign-in, no tracking.
