Any War puts you in command of small units fighting on real ground. Each battlefield is built from the map data of an actual place, so the ridgeline, the hedgerow and the river crossing you are fighting over are the real ones. You give orders to squads, tanks and guns: move, run, sneak, charge, lay smoke, dig in, set an ambush, call in armor. Cover and terrain decide the fight more than numbers do. Squads spread their fire, most shots miss, and men who are pinned down stay down. When the lines meet in the older wars, they fight hand to hand, man against man. Six battles are free and play offline: Brecourt Manor, Carentan and Bastogne in 1944, Gettysburg in 1863, Chateau Gaillard in 1204, and Kestrel Ridge in the far future. Two players can also fight each other online through Game Center. Clash of Eras is an optional purchase that puts two different wars on the same field: knights against a tank, a Civil War musket line against a strike team from the future. The older army arrives in greater numbers and carries fire pots and powder charges that can burn out a tank that comes too close. Your first clash battle is free. Anywhere on Earth is a second optional purchase. Search or pan to any real place, frame the ground, and fight over it in any era, with its buildings, woods, roads and hedges pulled from OpenStreetMap. Try it free for 7 days; nothing is charged automatically. Currahee is a third optional purchase: a campaign that follows E Company, 506th Parachute Infantry, through nine missions and a bonus, from Normandy to Holland, Bastogne and Haguenau. Your losses carry over, and each mission ends with a debrief and its sources. The first mission is free. Vietnam: MACV-SOG is a fourth optional purchase: eight missions with SOG's recon teams and the helicopter crews who flew for them, in Laos and Vietnam from 1968 to 1971. Each debrief tells what really happened, with its sources. The first mission is free. Historical advisor: Gerald R. Baron, author of "It Was My Turn". A short guided training battle teaches the controls. Every purchase is one-time. There is no subscription.
