One hundred and twenty short passages from the wisdom writing of the ancient world, arranged into eight collections. The Argument with the River gathers what was said about floods, wells and irrigation. The Mouth and the Wall holds counsel on speech, silence, and the very old advice to sleep before answering. The rest cover measurement, craft, law and administration, mortality, thresholds, and the long project of reading time off the sky. Each passage runs two to five sentences and closes on a single line meant to stay with you. Everything is paraphrased in plain modern English and labelled that way, never presented as a translation, and never put in the mouth of a named historical person. Sources are given by tradition: Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Hellenic, Vedic, early Chinese, Levantine. The few pieces written for this collection in the manner of a temple scriptorium say so on the page. A new passage arrives each day, chosen by the date itself. It is the same passage for every reader, with no server deciding anything. What follows it is ordered by the themes you have been spending time on lately. Reading is measured by attention rather than a checkbox. A passage moves from glanced to read to studied depending on how long it stays open, and the star chart turns that into a sky: eight constellations, one star for each passage, brighter as the passage behind it gets more of your time. The layout is fixed, so it is the same sky on every launch and every device. Forty seals wait in the wardrobe, earned for depth, for finishing a collection, for notes written, for reading at odd hours. Locked ones show their condition and how far along you are, because an achievement you cannot see the shape of is only a surprise. Keep the passages worth returning to, write a note of up to 280 characters against any of them, and search the whole archive by phrase or theme. The palette drifts slowly across twelve decan hours, after the star tables Egyptian astronomers used to tell time at night. Switch that off if you prefer it still.

About

Taoist Diary

Taoist Diary is a quiet reading app. One meditation arrives each morning โ€” a short passage from the Taoist, Buddhist and Stoic traditions, with a line to carry into the day. THE DAILY MEDITATION Three hundred and sixty-five mornings, each one built the same way: a title, a line from the source, a short reflection, and the name of the text it came from. Nothing to scroll through, nothing to catch up on. One day at a time. THE SHELF Ten complete works, in public-domain translations, free to read: โ€ข Tao Te Ching โ€” Laozi โ€ข Zhuangzi โ€” Zhuang Zhou โ€ข The Four Lesser Classics โ€” Taoist canon โ€ข Actions and their Retributions โ€” Anonymous, Sung dynasty โ€ข The Classic of Filial Piety โ€” attributed to Confucius and Zang-tze โ€ข The Dhammapada โ€” the Buddhist canon โ€ข The Sutta-Nipata โ€” the Buddhist canon โ€ข Meditations โ€” Marcus Aurelius โ€ข The Discourses of Epictetus โ€ข The Encheiridion โ€” Epictetus You can read every one of them without paying anything, and without an internet connection once the app is installed. THE TALES Fifty-eight parables, retold from named sources across eight traditions โ€” Taoist, Buddhist, Chinese, Greek, Indian, Sufi, Stoic and Zen. One arrives each week. Every tale names the work it came from; none of them were invented for this app. LISTENING Everything above can be heard as well as read: the daily meditation, nine of the ten books, and the tales, narrated. There is background music you can leave on underneath, or turn off. Listening is the part that costs. Reading is not. WHAT IS FREE, AND WHAT IS NOT Reading is free โ€” the daily meditation and all ten books, always. Listening is a subscription: US$1.99 per month or US$19.99 per year, with seven days free before anything is charged. Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. The subscription renews automatically unless it is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, and your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours of the end of that period. You can manage the subscription and turn off auto-renewal in your Apple Account settings after purchase.
