Moonread is a TXT reader built for comfortable, uninterrupted reading. Add your own text files, adjust font size, line spacing, colors and paper texture, and read with page turns or continuous scrolling. • Large files open while they load, and you return to where you left off • Common encodings are detected automatically; if text looks wrong, change the encoding in Reading Settings and it follows you to your other devices • Your shelves are real folders on this device or in iCloud; Moonread never rewrites your books • Contents, full-text search, bookmarks, highlights and notes • Light and dark color themes, plus Rice Paper, Kraft Paper, Fine Linen and Grain textures • Reading adapts to one or two pages on iPad and foldables; contents, search and settings open in system sheets without reflowing the text • Pick up on another device: progress, bookmarks and notes sync through iCloud, and you're told when another device has read further • Continue Reading widget, Control Center, Shortcuts and Siri take you straight back to your book; find books on your shelf from system Search • Reading statistics: how long and what you read each day • Data Management: back up and restore reading records and palettes when you switch devices AI is optional and can be turned off in Settings with one switch; reading works fine without it. To discuss a passage, connect an AI service you choose. Moonread asks before anything is first shared, then sends your question and related content to that service; its access, pricing and privacy terms are set by the provider. No ads, no account, and no servers of our own: your books and reading records are stored on your devices and in your iCloud. Content is sent to an AI service only when you choose to use AI, as described above. Moonread has no bookstore. Reading is free; Settings include completely optional tips that unlock nothing. Payments are handled by Apple.

Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is monetization model: Moonread at free against Readora's freemium. Moonread also leads on rating (5.0 vs 4.8). Readora's advantage is ratings volume (5 vs 1). On price, update cadence, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Readora sells 1 one-off in-app purchase and Moonread sells 4 one-off in-app purchases. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Moonread holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.8. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Readora has 5 ratings behind it against 1, so its average is the more settled of the two.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Readora ships an update every 4 days, Moonread every 2 days. The most recent releases landed on October 31, 2026 and November 1, 2026 respectively.
