Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is ads: Cudex at none against Steps's shown. Cudex also leads on rating (5.0 vs 4.8) and update cadence (weekly vs fortnightly). Steps's advantage is ratings volume (136K vs 4) and iOS requirement (17.0 vs 26.5). On price, in-app purchases, monetization model and device support there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Steps sells 1 one-off in-app purchase and Cudex sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $4.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

Cudex holds the better App Store score, 5.0 against 4.8. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Steps has 136K ratings behind it against 4, so its average is the more settled of the two.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

Steps ships an update fortnightly, Cudex weekly. The most recent releases landed on November 3, 2026 and October 24, 2026 respectively.
