Verdict

The call

The clearest difference is rating: FluentU at 4.3 against LazyLanguages's 3.7. FluentU also leads on ratings volume (2.8K vs 10). LazyLanguages's advantage is monetization model (free with in-app purchases vs subscription) and review sentiment (78% vs 56%). On price, update cadence, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. FluentU sells 12 in-app purchases, starting at $14.99 per month and LazyLanguages sells 3 in-app purchases, starting at $3.99 per month. Whichever you choose, the download price is not the number that matters.

ReceptionRating · Positive reviews · Number of ratings

FluentU holds the better App Store score, 4.3 against 3.7. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: FluentU has 2.8K ratings behind it against 10, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 56% of FluentU's written reviews are positive against 78% of LazyLanguages's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.

UpkeepUpdate frequency

FluentU ships an update fortnightly, LazyLanguages every 2 weeks. The most recent releases landed on October 26, 2026 and October 20, 2026 respectively.
