You have drilled the deck. You know every card. Then the character turns up on a menu, in a message, on an exam paper — and nothing comes. There is a reason for that. A flashcard shows you the character and then asks whether you knew it. You flip it over, see that you were right, and grade yourself — after you have already seen the answer. That is recognition. Reading Chinese takes recall, and they are not the same skill. THE HERO METHOD This app never shows you a character and asks whether you knew it. You are given the word and a row of empty slots waiting for its characters. What you get as the prompt is your choice: the meaning, the pinyin, or both. The character itself has to come out of memory. Then you have to find it on a grid where every tile is drawn from your own HSK level or the levels below it, so there is nothing you can rule out on sight and nothing the screen will hand you. Guess wrong and the tile is struck out, and you still have to find the right character before you move on. Recall, then recognition, on every word, across all 5,000 of them.
