Verdict
The clearest difference is rating: Dolby XP at 2.3 against Onkyo Remote 3's 1.8. Onkyo Remote 3's advantage is review sentiment (26% vs 6%) and ratings volume (386 vs 52). On price, update cadence, ads and in-app purchases there is nothing between them.

Both are free to download. Neither carries in-app purchases, so what you see is what you pay.
Dolby XP holds the better App Store score, 2.3 against 1.8. That said, the two scores are not equally well evidenced: Onkyo Remote 3 has 386 ratings behind it against 52, so its average is the more settled of the two. Written reviews complicate that: 26% of Onkyo Remote 3's written reviews are positive against 6% of Dolby XP's, so the app with the better star average is not the one people write more warmly about.
Onkyo Remote 3 ships an update every 6 weeks, Dolby XP every 2 months. The most recent releases landed on October 23, 2026 and October 24, 2026 respectively.
