All Versions of Kanji Teacher
12.4
May 24, 2023
New setting "Smooth drawn stroke":
○ By default, Kanji Teacher aligns a drawn stroke with the correct stroke. This allows for fluent writing, as mistakes are detected immediately and subsequent strokes can be drawn based on them. Experienced users of Kanji Teacher can now disable this behavior - or enable it only when Kanji Teacher detects an error, to continue writing the kanji in a meaningful way.
Two new options allow more control over when the pattern is shown:
○ "Levels for which pattern is shown at the beginning": The default is NEW and FAIL, but after some learning time this setting may make more sense only at NEW.
○ "Show pattern also when": Specifies whether the help pattern is displayed after a test is marked incorrect or the character is drawn completely. The second option can be useful if the strokes are not smoothed, then you can see the correct strokes at the end for comparison.
Other improvements:
○ Implemented about two dozen corrections to words, kanjis, hints, and pronunciations.
○ Removed words and their tests that are 100% identical to a kanji (both the reading and the keyword).
○ Added a new voice and tried to improve the quality of the existing ones. PS: The quality of the voices and the exact pronunciation also depends on the device and is partly out of my control.
○ Font sizes have been slightly adjusted, especially for split screen on iPad and when display zoom is active.
As with every update, a handful of tests will be reverted to NEW because the correct answer has changed slightly. And: I am still working on requests that have not been implemented in this release.

Besides some bugfixes two important new settings have been added.
○ Show answer: OFF (previous behavior), WRONG (new default), ALL
With this new setting you can control if the answer buttons show what they actually mean after answering the question. With WRONG this only happens if the answer was incorrect, and only the incorrect answer is revealed. With ALL it happens always and for all buttons.
○ Auto proceed: OFF, CORRECT (new default), ALWAYS (previous behavior)
This setting defines whether the next test is automatically presented when you release the answer button - or you have to press NEXT (or anywhere on the answers) to continue. Auto proceed helps you to learn faster: with CORRECT it happens if the answer is right, but in case of an incorrect answer you can look at the correct answer calmly and then continue. With ALWAYS it happens even in case of an incorrect answer. One behavior remains the same: As long as your finger is on the answer button or SKIP, the answer remains displayed, only when you release it "Auto proceed" becomes active.
The new default differs from the previous behavior, but you can simply set it back to the way it was before using the settings "Show answer: OFF" and "Auto proceed: ALWAYS".
Many thanks to Gabriel, Soshun and Goccia!

# Radicals
Learning of radicals is now supported in many different ways: Each Kanji has its own radical in addition to the already present components. In addition to the 214 radicals and 143 components (which cover around 98% of all Kanjis), there are now also own tests and an own Analyze screen that shows which Kanjis are made up of them. Kanjis can now also be searched for using radicals and components.
# iPad
iPad support has been improved. The landscape mode, Split View (two apps next to each other) and Slide Over (Kanji Teacher above another app, e.g. Safari) are also new.
# Keywords
In addition to the existing Kanji keywords (from “Remembering the Kanjis”), keywords from Wikipedia can now also be selected (with a slight modification to ensure the words are unique). These are also available in German, French, Spanish, Italian and Russian. Some of these words are automatically translated and should be treated with caution – as a result it remains possible to specify the keywords (and now also the radicals too) yourself.
# Settings
- The SYNC function is used to synchronize the saved data with the iCloud.
- Kanji Teacher now also offers a dark mode.
- Vibration is used as feedback for correct and incorrect tests.
- The size of the answer grid can now be adjusted to make the tests more challenging.
- In sentences, the translation and reading can now be hidden.
- “Pencil Support” is no longer used on the iPhone.
# Multiple learning lists
In addition to the existing starred list, up to seven own lists can now be managed, searched, and the Kanas, Kanjis and radicals assigned in the SEARCH and ANALYZE screens. Additionally, Kanjis detailed in sections of popular textbooks and Kanken test groups can be assigned to one of these lists under SETTINGS. The tests from the “More” section can also now be marked with star.
# New tests
In addition to the components and radicals, the following new tests have been added:
- 127 important geographical locations in Japan
- Over 1,300 Japanese first names and surnames together with their reading
- Some very rarely used words have been removed.
# Tutor
The “Recommended Learning” list has been renamed as “Tutor” and significantly expanded: Which tests are included can now be set, while the biggest change is the addition of two dedicated tutors – one for Kana and one for Kanji. These tutors accompany the user through the entire learning process, explain Kanji Teacher, introduce new characters, present the tests in the tutor list and celebrate achievements.
# Analyze
In the Analyze screen, characters can now be copied to the clipboard and can also be enlarged using the pinch function. In addition to access to the integrated dictionary, external websites (e.g. for explaining the etymology of the Kanji) are now also integrated. Compounds can now be pronounced aloud, the character have a new animation showing the stroke sequence.
## Closing words
Various pronunciations of words have also been corrected and other bugs fixed. Many thanks for your feedback! In particular, I would like to thank Gabriel, Aleksandar, Alex, Dave, Frédéric, Hannah, Héloïse, Maxym, Richard and Shoushun. Unfortunately, I was not able to put all of your suggestions into action. I hope to address this in the next release. Many thanks for your ideas and your patience.

Sentences
- Kanji Teacher now comes with around 6,000 sample sentences, which are shown on the Analyze screen of the Kanji.
- Around 8,000 tests have been created based on these sentences, where the corresponding Kanji is omitted and has to be found.
New tests
- Listening: Words from the basic vocabulary are read out and the user must then choose both the Japanese spelling and the meaning in English. The test continues when both answers are given.
- Compounds: Compound words that are already used for learning the pronunciation of the Kanjis can be listened to in this test. The test queries how they are written and what they mean.
Navigation
- Kanji Teacher now has many more tests and options compared to the first version, including Hiragana, Katakana, vocabulary and sentences. The navigation has been changed to take this into account: The sections “Kana”, “Kanji” and “Vocab” can now be selected at the top of the screen. The tests can then be limited by level (such as JLPT Level), or whether the user only wants to see the highlighted elements or those that Kanji Teacher will suggest next for testing (RL = Recommended Learning).
Search
- The complex system with commands as used previously has been replaced by graphic elements.
- Sorting of the characters can be redefined.
- A search of related words in the Kanji is now possible using the “Search also Words” option.
Tests
- New TESTS screen searches through all tests according to a variety of criteria.
- Also with sorting (for example, by test difficulty) and limitation of the number.
Games, this section has been completely redesigned with four new games:
- Kana Reading: Identify Hiragana and Katakana together.
- Kana Listening: Listen to Hiragana and Katakana together.
- Kanji Reading: Read both the On-reading and Kun-reading of a Kanji.
- Sentences Listening: Try and understand a complete sentence by listening only.
Write
- The delete button has been newly positioned and is thus less intrusive.
- In Settings, the user can specify whether the arrows for the Stroke Order are hidden.
- The strictness of the “Angle” error has been slightly reduced.
- The “Not Drawn” error should no longer mistakenly occur, but instead only when the user deliberately clicks briefly on the screen in order to have the next stroke shown.
- With certain Hiragana (such as さ), the Explain window indicates that the fonts used by Kanji Teacher for reading and writing differ slightly.
- Practice Mode: New button allows to show or hide the pattern.
Speech
- If the user has own or enhanced voices installed for voice output on their device - such as Siri or a male voice – then these can be selected in Settings.
- The pronunciation has been optimized so that ちゅ is pronounced better, for example. Around 1,500 words have been checked by hand for this purpose.
- The automatic reading out of a character at the beginning of the test can now be switched on and off.
- Running background music is not stopped when Kanji Teacher emits tones.
Analyze
- Clicking on a word, structural element or similar sounding Kanji accesses the next screen of this element.
- Sections can now be opened and closed.
- Similar readings for Kanjis from other groups can also be shown by pressing “more” in the corresponding section.
Recommended Learning (RL)
- New concept now on the Tests level. The selection is thus more precise.
- Kana, Kanji and Vocab: Each section of Kanji Teacher now has its own number of suggested tests.
Backup
- A backup is made for each week and each month and also for the maximum learning progress achieved. Backups are found in the “save-files” folder and can be restored using the “Import” function.
- When importing an old version of Kanji Teacher, the original file is also saved.
Adjustments
- The font size on the iPhone 5 has been increased by around 5%.
- The manual can be read directly in Kanji Teacher.
- Various content changes have been made (thanks here to Michele!)
