This is a huge update to Nihongo, taking a massive leap forward in making kanji more understandable to learners. Most Japanese dictionaries present kanji as a compilation of individual elements with their own specific meanings. This is actually a common misunderstanding of how kanji work. The truth is, each element can contribute a different thing to the kanji — a specific meaning, a broad category, or a pronunciation. Understanding the true contribution of each element can unlock a richer understanding of every character, helping you to remember them easier, learn new characters faster, and even guess at rough meaning and pronunciations for characters you've never seen before. This information has always been available, but until now it required the use of an etymological dictionary and knowledge of a verbose and esoteric set of terminology like “ideogram” and “phonosemantic compound”. This update compiles this information into a user-friendly, learner-focused presentation that unlocks the learning potential of this content (without requiring a degree in linguistics). Other Improvements * Update clipboard permission footer string to remove reference to iOS 16 * Add kanji readings for non-joyo kanji (thanks Andrew!) * Add a clearer error message when sync fails because another one of your devices is on a later version of the app. Bug Fixes * Fix meaning text for 把. (thanks Björn!) * Fix issue where tapping on search tab while unviewed photos were remaining in photo lookup mode, popping all the way to search screen would not be prevented on iOS 17. * Fix 私から being parsed as ひそから (thanks Gerhard!) * Fix 細かいお金 in french (thanks Alexis!) * Fix contained words for 三重県 (thanks 810Teams!) * Fix search bar not transitioning to compact correctly. (thanks to a bunch of you!)

Description of Nihongo

Nihongo is an offline Japanese dictionary, flashcard app, and reading assistant, designed to make the best use of the time you dedicate to studying Japanese. Our dictionary is made to find what you're looking for fast, with the words Japanese speakers actually use at the top of every search result, and every word marked as "common", "uncommon", or "rare". "Clippings", our reading assistant, is what makes Nihongo stand apart from other dictionaries. Paste in Japanese text from a website, email, an eBook, or anywhere else, and we'll add furigana or romaji to every word. We also enable you to tap on any word to see its definition. This will truly change the way you read Japanese. And now, you can get the same experience right in Safari using our Safari extension. Personal experience (as well as a good deal of research in second-language acquisition) has shown us that the words that you're most likely to remember are the words that you're encountering naturally. To this end Nihongo automatically draws from your search history and clippings to compile flashcard decks filled with words for which you already have context. This makes it easy to study both the words you looked up during Japanese class, and those that appear in your favorite song or videogame. And by adding notes to the back of flashcards you can further connect each vocabulary word to your personal contextual understanding. Kanji flashcards prompt you to draw the missing kanji from the words you're studying, creating stronger connections between the characters and their real-world use. Built-in kanji decks give you 2 or 3 key words to study for each kanji. This app is only possible because of the JMDict (edrdg.org) and Tatoeba (tatoeba.org) projects. I highly encourage you to support these incredible projects that make apps like Nihongo possible! DICTIONARY * Over 180,000 words, 165,000 example sentences, and 6000 kanji entries. * Every word clearly marked as common, uncommon, or rare. * Add your own notes to any dictionary entry. * Quickly identify transitive/intransitive word pairs. * Audio pronunciations of words and example sentences (Requires Nihongo Pro) PHOTO LOOKUP (OCR) [Pro] * Look up words just by taking a picture. * Uses Google Cloud Vision to provide high-quality text recognition. * Just tap on a word to look it up. CLIPPINGS (READING ASSISTANT) [Pro] * Adds furigana or romaji to text pasted into the app. * Tap on any word to see its definition without leaving the clipping. * Flashcard deck automatically created so you can study the new words in a clipping. * Display text horizontally or vertically. * Have Nihongo read any clipping out loud. FLASHCARDS [Pro] * Flashcards automatically generated from words you lookup in the dictionary or paste into the app. * Nihongo learns what words you know, and won't bother you again with words you've mastered. * Built-in kanji flashcard decks up through Middle School. * Intuitive spaced repetition flashcard system for vocabulary and kanji drawing. * Level up flashcards by studying every day. * No penalty for missing a day of study, come back anytime. SEARCH * Search using English, Japanese, or romaji. * Supports searching for conjugated words in both English and Japanese. * Search for kanji using radicals and stroke counts. • Amazing, clean, accurate! So many features

I’ve had the pro version for a while, and I bought the pitch accent database and all I can say is how amazed I am with how clean and easy to use it is. The SRS makes it easy to review vocabulary daily, and the OCR works super well.

A feature I would love added in the future is a monolingual dictionary feature. It is quite a pain to switch to a separate app like my 国語辞典 one. Especially for advanced learners a monolingual dictionary would be an amazing addition.

Other than that there is nothing I would change! Props to the devs 🙏🏽

    Developer Response

Thanks so much for the kind words! I would also love a monolingual dictionary, and it's something I've been trying to find a good data source for for a long time. I'm going to play around with using AI to generate one, but will only add it if the quality is good enough. Anyway, thanks for letting me know this is important to you!
  • Useful every day

Nihongo helps me everyday as I prepare for reading for the JLPT tests and for manga. I feel great about my knowledge of kanji but I still stumble on kanji I haven't seen in a while. Nihongo keeps my memory fresher.
  • Perfect Dictionary

Not only does this app supply every possible word used in the japanese language, its breakdowns within each kanji can make it much easier for beginners to understand the meaning of each individual kanji and their pronunciations. The fact that this app works offline too is also amazing which means you can study whilst travelling. Especially if you are in Japan, the photo feature allows for you to take a picture of an unknown piece of japanese and it will instantly translate the japanese for you and give you a large breakdown on the words as well as the particles (only available on the paid version).
Overall this app is a must have to say the least.
