  • Excellent

Did exactly what I needed to confirm my iPad Pro was outputting surround sound over HDMI. Simple and effective!
  • Not sure how to use this.

I love the idea that I can test my speaker for the correct surround sound. I just purchased the Apple TV 4K and wanted to be sure that the speakers were placed correctly. During the 5 speaker test all the speaker images were blue and the sound from each speaker was great. I spent the additional $.99 to get the center speaker test. This is the test that is confusing to me. There are three parts to this test. When I do the second part, which is the dialogue, the center speaker as well as the left and right speakers are red during that part of the test. There is a mention of phantom speakers. My confusion is that I do not know what a red speaker image means and what to do about it. And there is no manual or explanation.

So bottom line is that I really like being able to do this test. But there is no explanation as to what it means what to do if the speaker image is red. That is the only reason I gave it a four star.

Hello happydays58230! In the second Center Speaker test, the red color doesn’t necessarily mean anything is wrong, and actually indicates which speaker where you should hear the spoken dialogue coming from. I used a red speaker image in this particular test as the other speaker images are already colored blue to indicate that non-dialogue background noise is present in those speakers. So if you’re hearing the dialogue come out your center speaker when the center speaker image is colored red, then you’re all good! (In hindsight, maybe I should have had the surround speakers a different color and kept the active test speaker color blue...) Thanks for your feedback. Much appreciated!
  • Wasn’t sure at first, now I’m positive!

Was looking everywhere for a test surround source and found this one. Downloaded from my iPhone and then activated the iPhone mirror function to my Apple TV and it worked perfectly! I really like the entertaining music riffs as opposed to sound signals to confirm the sound channels. Downloaded and purchased the sound ear candy app next, to my Apple TV after listening to a few samples. Turned out that purchase was well worth the investment! LOVE the surround sound arranged tracks! I would say “Rain” is my fav for a very relaxing ambiance and the pic goes great to enhance the ambient mood in the room, but they’re all pretty great! Already looking forward to the new tracks I hope are coming soon!

  • No Atmos

No Atmos test. No 7.1 test. The 5.1 test also doesn’t work on my sound bar.
  • This was the first app I got from this developer

And it helped me resolve some issues with my original Kenwood 5.1 surround sound system. It’s one of the first surround sound systems I had ever seen I got it and the speakers for 100 bucks flat, original unit, original speakers.

Which means that I’ve got two columns 3 3/4 feet tall that include 15 inch woofers, The satellite speakers for the rear were kind of sucky though, so I set up a couple of medium sized Technics speakers that had a three-way passive crossover system. So the explosions and stuff sound pretty good from the rear speakers. The center speaker is all right but I also have a Klipsch SW hooked up to an extra Yamaha receiver wired up in mono and the EQ completely disabled so as to not add extra coloration.

But the main problem with the Kenwood is ringing out the system so that it sounds like proper surroundsound when you are sitting in the middle of the room, but fortunately I am able to tell the system exactly where I am in the room, how far away the speakers are from each other, exactly where are the rear speakers are, and it’s very easy to set that, except that the measuring units are all in meters on the system.

But this app allows me to make sure that I have done it properly if it doesn’t sound right in this app then it’s not going to sound right when you are watching a movie later.

The developer also has an air candy app for you to enjoy when you have your system set up properly and it’s worth the four extra dollars to download the music, check out the James Bond theme especially, 64 guitar tracks!

Unfortunately the only issue I have with this app is that the subwoofer check doesn’t completely work when it is doing the comparison. It works at the beginning when it sends the different frequencies through the subwoofer but when it is playing the music, and switches between the surround system and the subwoofer, the subwoofer does not play. There is also another frequency test toward the end where it is supposed to be sending sounds through the sub, but they simply don’t come through.

Perhaps the Apple TV version of this app will do it but for some reason I can’t get the subwoofer test to come up.

Thanks so much for the detailed review! I'm glad you found the app useful! (And also thanks you for checking out the "James Bond Theme" in my Surround Sound Ear Candy app too!) From your description, it sounds like the Subwoofer Check Track is working as intended. The "high pass filter check" portion of the test is designed to let you know if your system is sending any *unwanted* low frequencies to your main speakers (helpful to know since subsonic frequencies can potentially damage smaller, satellite-style speakers). So if you don't hear anything when the red indicators "flatten out" during this last section of the Subwoofer Check Track, it means your system is properly filtering out your lows. However, if you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to send me an email at: jeff@jeffperrinmusic.com Cheers! —Jeff
  • Useful for setting up Apple TV

My Apple TV 4 is connected to a Yamaha cinema unit and it was hard to tell if it was automatically deciding the audio. This app helped me see that it was working unfortunately the speakers in the visual don’t show where the sound is coming from.

Hi John! I'm glad you found the app helpful! The animation on the TV screen (when certain speakers turn blue) illustrates which speakers should be sounding. So if what you're hearing does not match up with what you're seeing on the screen, then it's possible your Yamaha unit isn't on correct setting for Dolby Digital surround.  Tip: Make sure the Yamaha unit is in "straight" or "direct" mode, and not on an "enhanced" (DSP effect) setting. The "enhanced modes" are designed for pushing stereo content to surround speakers, and can cause problems with true Dolby Digital surround sound. Hope this helps! —Jeff
