  • Compared to GPS

Scenic is as good or better than a dedicated GPS unit. It turns your mobile device into an intuitive GPS with capabilities of creating your own routes . Yes , I know that most navigation apps have that feature but with Scenic it’a easier to import any of your favorites routes. . Personally I don’t like having a lot of farkle on my bike so just having only my mobile device keeps things simple. And since most think mobile navigational apps are susceptible to lack of data coverage ( cell coverage ) with Scenic you just download the offline maps you need . They give a certain amount of credits so that you can download a good amount of maps but if you need more just purchase more credits and your good to go. Again just be sure that your mobile device has the room for extra data. The reason I gave it 4 of 5 stars was due to the voice prompts. Just don’t like they way it sounds. Besides that it’s the go to motorcycle navigation app for me , go ahead give it a try.

  • Tested them all… clear winner.

Tried Rever, Harley App, Calimoto, Indian App, Dtecht and several others. I’m not commenting on the social part of all these apps. It’s just not what I needed an app for. I’m commenting on route planning, map quality, poi data, on screen navigation and the ui/ux quality and intuitiveness. Scenic spanks the others. Isn’t that what a navigation app should do? It’s rock solid, does not crash, does not do anything stupid, stores and retrieves from server so it’s sync’d when I set up on an iPad and navigate on a phone. Oh… it has a real iPad app rather than a puny phone screen in the middle of your iPad. So disappointing to have a nice iPad and see a phone sized interface emulated in the middle of your beautiful screen. When you think you want to do something, you can. The “here” maps… whatever that is, have as much detail as you would ever need all through Alaska, the Yukon, British Columbia, Calgary down through the Western US and into Mexico. In planning 5000 miles of a route it could find every poi for starts, finishes, gas stops, hotels… it’s crazy stupid how hard and how smart somebody (Guido?) is that programmed this. I have a dozen technology patents and I know 1st class A+ software when I see it and this software is a steal. I pray you can rest guilt free at night knowing how little you paid to use it in comparison to the scores of months of labor that went into coding it. It’s really, really good.

  • Best motorcycle NAV and route planning I’ve tried yet

Much better/easier to use than the other apps I’ve tried (HD app, REVER, and Google Maps). The on screen buttons are big and easy to hit, the route planning is very good, and the step by step direction are well done too.

My only gripe (more of a suggestion) is that you cannot have different “legs” of a route with different routing preferences (eg fast from A to B, curvy from B to C, etc.). An alternate would be the ability to “string routes together” (eg ride route #1 then guide me to the starting point of route #2 and run route #2, etc.). either of these would give the ability to quickly and automatically create real world routes without spending a LOT of time adding extra stops or vias to force a certain type of route. If this ability was added to the route planning, Scenic would, in my opinion, definitely be a five star motorcycle app.

  • Potentially complex, ultimately simple.

Scenic offers every conceivable knob to twiddle, for both the application and the navigation. Want a compass in the upper right? Prefer your speed? There are settings for that.

This sounds daunting, but there are 2 perfect saves here: 1) it works out of the box perfectly well enough to get experience on what you want to change. And 2) the author is responsive and helpful. Meaning you can get the answer you need or he will work on changing the thing you stumbled over. (Be realistic, not every user-reported issue will make a change, and all changes need to happen in controlled order. But try pointing out a user-experience problem to Gxxxxn.)

Strongly recommend Scenic, especially before buying something else. And remember to download a high-resolution voice, though Apple’s default lo-rez one was kind of retro-fun. The hi-rez ones are more intelligible in a noisy helmet.

  • Best motorcycle navigation that I’ve found

I’ve looked at a lot of different options for navigation while motorcycling, and while there are a number of apps / devices that do some things well, Scenic is the only one that puts a check in the box next to all of my must-haves: - has to have downloadable maps: Scenic gives you a set amount of credits for downloading maps of desired states, with the ability to purchase more. I live in New England, so I ride a lot of different states, but the allotted amount of credits has been enough to cover all the states I ride in (7 so far). There’s no pulling you in with 1 state and then dinging you for the rest. Also, when maps need updating, that doesn’t go against your credits. Scenic doesn’t have those hidden costs so prevalent today. - has to accept custom maps from other sites: I use Kurviger to really detail my maps, and I love the fact that I can import this directly and simply. Scenic supports a number of formats from a number of different providers. - has to have good, clean interface when riding. The interface is very simple and clean. It’s easy to glance down under way and not get distracted. All in all a lot of great features and good value for the money. The only alternative I can see is a $700 Zumo, which, while nice, is hard to justify when Scenic exists.

  • Revised: works great!

After having downloaded the state maps I need and getting an update of this I can highly recommend. The route planner has always been top notch but the improved voice prompts and the battery saver mode are really good improvements so that you don’t have to have your phone screen lit all the time. One improvement would be a Lock Screen widget with next turn info or if battery saver could dim the screen until tapped. I’ve tried several of the apps and they aren’t even close to as good as this thing. (Hey Rever I’m looking at you). Keep in mind that it will force you back to waypoints if you miss a turn. You need to “skip” (trash can) the missed waypoint to stop being looped back. It takes a little learning curve but wow it’s great once you get familiar with it!

    Developer Response

Sorry for your bad experience. I would love to know what exactly happened in your case. It could be a bug, or it could be a setting. If you're still up for it, would you mind contacting me directly through scenic.app/help?
  • The Best!

This is by far the best, easiest to use GPS route planning program on the market. If you're frustrated with Garmin BaseCamp and/or feel intimidated by your inability to use your GPS, give Scenic Motorcycle Navigation a try. I recently purchased a Garmin zumo XT2. It works seemlessly with Scenic Motorcycle Navigation. It's obvious that Garmin is moving away from BaseCamp, as a disclaimer now appears when attempting to use BaseCamp with the XT2, stating that the XT2 is no longer "officially supported." The future is wireless route/data file transfers. You no longer need to drag your laptop and cables along with you on a long trip. I'm not a BaseCamp hater, as many are. I used it for years. Having said that, BaseCamp and cables are yesterday's news. No steep learning curve with Scenic Motorcycle Navigation. The train has left the station. Jump on and start enjoying your GPS vs. hours of endless frustration.

  • Scenic is a powerful and flexible route planning tool

Fifth update: Just downloaded the version 3.5 update and it looks very impressive

Fourth update: Scenic allows me to create folders of routes and of favorite locations, to keep my plans organized. I can save and edit a route and use it at any time. I can join the route at the closest point to where I am. Third update: I now have a library of over 100 routes created and saved in folders by city and state. I use these routes for pleasure drives and longer trips in my Mazda Miata. Unlike other nav apps, with Scenic I can choose the exact route that I want to take. This has become one of my most-used apps! I really appreciate that I can update an existing route with new vias and stops, and that I can save a different variation of the route. The user forum is a great source of information on how to do specific tasks, and specifically how features work. There are configurable "detour" options to control the desired behavior if you miss a Via or a Stop accidentally or on purpose. That was a problem with other apps. I also like that I can import routes from Google via the Web App. The app is very customizable - I just changed the colors to increase visibility of the route. I create, copy, and edit routes on my iPad using its larger screen and then drive them using my iPhone in the car.
