  • Extremely Poor Connection Range

I have the original Meater and the positives are the thermometer is well packaged, sturdy, and easy to setup on the IOS app. The negative which outweighs all the positives is the thermometer’s ultra poor connection range which for me is around 30ft when it’s in my Cookshack smoker or Big Green Egg. The main reason I got this thermometer was to be able to monitor cooks on my phone while doing other things around the house but moments after leaving the Meater I get a notification that the connection is lost. I was also looking forward to using the Meater app’s cook monitoring notifications but since it’s always out range those features don’t work until I’m back within feet of the thermometer which makes them worthless. Maybe the Plus model has better connectivity but if you purchase the original Meater expect to have to go to your grill each time you want to check the temp of your meat.

Hello JGL341, Thank you for your review and your feedback. We do understand that there are connectivity limitations with our Original MEATER as the probe needs to connect to your smart device directly, using Bluetooth. We do offer a free service called MEATER Link, if you have a spare smart device, you are able to use it as a range extender. Please can we ask that you reach out to our Live Support Team at support.meater.com between 6am to 10pm MT, they will be more than happy to assist in getting you set up with MEATER Link. Kind regards, The MEATER Team
  • MEATER is excellent it the app holds its own

I’ve been using this app with the MEATER probe for a couple of years. We use it for every meat cook session we can both on the grill and the oven.

While the probe is necessary to use the majority of the features, the app has recently added a masterclass section with recipes and tips that can be accessed without having the probe paired. However, the probe is a must to access most of the features.

There are lower cost probes available and I’ve bought my share but the MEATER has outlasted all of them. Price wise is the same ballpark as similar quality probes so it’s not expensive when comparing apples to apples. I would definitely buy a MEATER probe before downloading this app.

  • If you like something perfectly rare, this is way to avoid overshooting the Mark

AND it accurately factors in "resting time" to insure maximum moisture. Otherwise "resting time" usually just turns the meat gray by the time you get around to cutting it. And there is more! If you sous-vide your meat the night before, you have to refrigerate it until the next day in the bag. How to get the center of that meat back the following day from fridge-temp to yesterdays rare-temp risks - once again -turning to meat bland and "medium"or worse!!! Using the MEATER inside the sous-vided meat, outside the bag inside a pan in the oven, allows you to get it back just to the right temperature to proceed outside the oven, with the blowtorch and still have it rare! Thanks for the awesome technology. Closest thing to Artificial Intelligence that I have - so far - found useful.

  • External temperature isn’t accurate

I love it, because it helps me when I’m grilling… The downside is that the external temperature is not nearly as accurate as the thermometer on the grill. The developer reached out to me and said that basically it can read differently based on the appliance and the location of the thermometer, and that it’s “not wrong”… that’s all well and good, but I’m a scientist and I know how to run an experiment. When I have two of them side by side in the same piece of meat reading differently, and when it’s reading the ambient temperature incorrectly (both indoors and outdoors) before it even makes it on the grill, it’s wrong. When my Primo has been cruising for 8 hours steady on at 225 and the MEATER is variable all the way to 300… it’s wrong. You went from 3 stars to 1 star by basically telling me that the reality I see and my personal experience with your device is just in my head, instead of hearing the feedback and looking for a fix. Even if you’re correct, it’s still a design flaw because I’m not getting accurate external cooking temps... I still rely on the grill thermometer instead of the MEATER. Now I’ll be looking for a different product. Good job.

Thank you for your review! The ambient readings certainly can look strange, temperatures throughout an appliance will vary dependant on location, this doesn't necessarily mean your appliance thermometer is wrong, it's just reading a different location :) We'd advise reaching out to our team for further support! https://support.meater.com
  • Solution looking for a problem

An old fashioned thermometer is one you stick into the meat, wait about 30 seconds, and see the temp. Cheap & easy. The new way is to buy a much more expensive, battery operated AND rechargeable digital thermometer, which requires you to load an app onto your phone (and keep updated) and then requires that you create an account (with password 👍) to login to this app so that you can use the system to tell you what the temp is. Oh, and the probe is three times thicker and has to go in about 4 inches. Again, a “solution” looking for a problem. Threw mine into the electronic recycle bin after the second use and went back to my nice old, reliable analog thermometer.

Regarding the developer’s response: I would like it better if you did not require that an account have to be set up to use the thermometer. I can see no valid reason why you can not just make it work with the app without having to create an account and log in.

Hi there, thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear you were not happy with our product. MEATER gives real time temperatures (ambient and internal) without having to open your oven/smoker and letting all the heat out. It gives you the opportunity to sit back and relax and enjoy valuable time with friends and family, and be alerted when the meat is ready to come out at just the perfect doneness. If there is ever anything we can do in future to help you experience an amazing cooking experience with MEATER, please do reach out to us at support.meater.com, and we'd be happy to help. :)
  • MEATER is very helpful

I’ve always battle with getting the meats cooked correctly and MEATER solves that problem, by getting the internal temperature perfect.
One of the nicest things about the MEATER app is the ability to see the temperatures and cooking process on my iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch. I usually set up the grill and the go about my chores while checking status on my watch. I can see meat temp, ambient temp and time to cook. The ambient temp is a big dead so as not to over or under heat the grill while cooking. The alert to remove the meat at the correct time to let it rest, gets the food close to perfection. MEATER has changed the way I grill and helped me do a better job.

  • Meat at its best (MEATER+)

I’ve recently gone down the rabbit hole of barbecue and smoking. This thing has been my right hand tool through the journey. They say the journey is the reward but that’s an understatement. A lot of the comments I’ve read say that it disconnects, it has not disconnected one time for me (20+ cooks). I do keep the probe clean and scrub it down after each use like the directions say. Other than that my only suggestion would be to keep the notes synced across devices. If I start a cook and add notes on my iPad, I cannot see or add to the same notes on my iPhone.

    UPDATE***
At first, I thought it was my grill’s probe, but after a smoke with 1 meater probe in the brisket and the other resting on a pan (2” up from grill surface) , the temperature fluctuations are ridiculous. Initially I will set my grill to 200° and the meter would only read the ambient as 150°. It will have this wide gradient for most of the cook. The closer to the stall and subsequently after, the ambient reading from the meater and the setpoint for the grill start to align. I can trust the meter only for an internal temperature. Other than that the timing and ambient are not anything I can trust. I realize that initially there’s not a good predictive estimate on timing for large blocks of meat because of the stall but this is like that across all cooks, whether it be a steak, fish, etc..

  • Too inconsistent

I have the MEATER Plus. When it works, it’s great. It just doesn’t always work. The app and Bluetooth/Wi-Fi is way too buggy. I don’t think I’ve ever gone through a whole smoke without it disconnecting at some point. The cloud is lousy. I have to have a device at home connected to the base, and the internet in order to see what my meat is doing remotely. Even at home sitting on the couch 10ft away (inside with a huge window between) it still disconnects anytime I turn my screen off.

So the base, that has to be connected to my iPad, which is connected to my phone through the cloud. It always disconnects. I guess it’s too cloudy. I smoke enough stuff, I could easily use the four pack, but I’m not about to spend that kind of money for a product that still has a lot of bugs. I’ll probably end up going with the MeatStick for the four pack bundle.

  • Take all guess work out of cooking!!!

How can a company possibly make a thermometer look sexy? I didn’t know it was possible but damnit they did it. This thing is amazing. Honestly amazong is an understatement- more like revolutionary. I’m actually taken aback. I have had several “digital thermometers” in the last but this ….this is in a completely different league. Besides being a conversation piece and is on display in our kitchen, when used with the app, it’s a complete powerhouse of metrics delivered instantly to you when you need it: ambient temp, target temp, internal temp, alarms for notifications, when to pull it off the heat for resting periods…it’s also filled with features. It has been 100% accurate so far and I’ve used it about a dozen times. It completely takes the guess work out of cooking. Firstly, no wires. That’s huge. Secondly, you can choose from pre-determined meat temp settings or do your own! There are presets for all kinds of meat amd fish. A countdown helps you gauge time and timers alert you when you’re not actively watching your phone. I could go on and on but the app itself is ROCK SOLID!

  • Great cooking too

I was given a smoker and a Souvide water heater as presents. I used the device thermometers and my dishes came out good but I always wondered about how well the meats were cooked. I then decided I needed an internal thermometer that could withstand the rigors of being in the heat of the cooking session and decided, after some research, that the Meater was the best tool for this.

Since I began using the Meater in smokers and Souvide cooking methods plus regular oven cooking, my dishes have stepped up to be the envy of my family. I enjoy watching the temperature graphs because it lets me see how the food is cooking. I also enjoy the “resting” phase of cooking since before Meater, it was a guesstimate. The other thing I enjoy is sharing the data with friends in the office at the water cooler. We can criticize and share recipes.

One last thing. If using in smokers, take care to clean the end (with vinegar) or else the thermometer does not charge.
