Great

Awesome app, would be even better if it had tides included. Can you include???

awesome

i’ve been using an app called surface and until i tried this app, i thought i was buggy but fine. This app blows it away being much more accurate (at least for me in SoCal) and user-friendly. Not sure how the “spot” function works as i have sharing location on but it seems to want me to set my location to somewhere in Nebraska. Only suggestion/wish for improvement is to add an apple watch compilation so that we can start a surf session from the watch quickly. Another might be to add an option to automatically stop the session if you spin the dial to unlock the watch from the water lock. Big thanks to the developers for making a useful app!

Response from developer

Our pleasure, we're happy to hear you're enjoying the app. Thanks for your feedback, means a lot and we'll take your ideas along with us on our roadmap! PS: Have you tried Siri to "Start-" or "Stop surfing with Dawn Patrol"

Works really well once you get it going

I was having trouble with this app initially, it wasn’t counting waves at all, but I contacted the developer and they resolved my issues. Now it’s working brilliantly. If you are having any problems, I recommend getting in touch with the developer as the app is well worth it. It’s most likely an issue with your settings on your watch or phone rather than the app.

Awesome apart from HR data not working

Really like the wave tracking, I found I had to go into security via the iPhone and grant the app read permissions on hr data to get heart rate working

Response from developer

Hi, thanks for your feedback. Heart rate should work, would you mind reaching out to us using the feedback button in the app? We can assist you in getting that working for you.

The best of the surf session apps, but...

Accurate wave count and easier to use than Surface (can’t end session when done) and Surf Tracker (need to press Apple Watch face after each wave).

Eats up my entire battery (AW3 38, I’m told the 42 has a slightly longer battery life) in about 2 hours or shortly after catching 30 waves. Oh yeah, and if the battery runs out before you close the app your entire session is rubbish. It’ll record your wave count but the waves will show up as occurring on December 31, 1970 at 14:00 and none of them will show up on the map. No wave info will show up. Of course it’s very difficult to turn off the app in the water when the watch face and you finger are wet and even more difficult when you’re trying to paddle and duck under waves.

Siri can help to open the app (sometimes when the mic isn’t waterlogged) but it can’t start or stop the app.

Missed some fun sessions because I forgot to turn on the app before I paddled out or because I couldn’t get the app to end session before my battery ran out.

Response from developer

Hi, The problems with synchronization when your battery of the Watch goes flat are fixed. When your Watch goes flat during your session, simply start the app on the Watch again after recharging the Watch. This will initiate the Synchronization process. Also we have added Siri support: Just t o let you know that in our latest release (2.1) we have added SIRI support. You can use SIRI to “Start surfing with Dawn Patrol” or “Stop surfing with Dawn Patrol". Only works on the English Siri for now. Thanks for your feedback and Happy surfing!

Good start

I’ve been using this app for the past few weeks. It’s recording my waves but the distance travelled is way off. My guess is that it’s calculating distance travelled by adding the distance paddled after my last wave plus the actual distance surfed. Additionally, it’s registering way more waves than I’m actually catching. The main reason I’m using the app is to capture my speeds but due to the miscounting of waves it’s hard to see what my speeds are. The app has ways to go to catch up to the ripcurl gps watch but it’s a good start. One thing I’d like to see on the next iteration is a battery indicator, a LTE signal display, and a missed call/text count or indicator. Might as well take advantage of the Apple Watch 3 hardware. I bought the watch to specifically receive calls and messages while I’m surfing but the app does not take full advantage of these features and constantly unlocking the Digital Crown to check missed calls/texts, or battery life makes using the watch with the app more difficult. Keep going, this app has lots of utility potential.

Thanks a lot for your feedback. We will make a record of your feature requests and add them to our roadmap. Stay tuned on the updates. Happy surfing.

Hardware limitation? App limitation?

Overall, I like this app so the developer can keep working on accuracy issue. My only concern (yet the most important factor) is accuracy. After a session in the water, there are always multiple random moving records nearby land locations. I even don’t understand why it happens. Maybe hardware limitation(?) of not capable of keeping constant GPS signal? Also even in the water, I got some records about movement that I even didn’t try (or move a bit). I guess there are some random location hopping in general and the app considers as a ride. Finally location names are incorrect even in CA. Honestly I’m not sure these issues are completely fixable due to hardware (apple watch 3) limitation, but I hope the developer can figure out better ways in terms of software aspect.
