The Issue with updates that my computer can’t take

Always liked Ulysses and I’m talking for years. Liked the philosophy of minimal distraction on the program, yet a powerful application underlying that could be utilised as necessary.
My beef is about the way the company considers that when it decides to “upgrade” its program to the point your computer is not compatible your only given the option of:
Keep paying the subscription fee to stay with the older compatible version OR cope with a throw down of an old old style version!
Fair play here would be:
I can keep my last usable version as I paid for it, and simply discontinue my subscription. Of course unless there will be further advances that can be utilized with High Sierra OS
where then the subscription pricing would be adjusted downwards accordingly.

I Believe this review is to the point and in all fairness should elicit a comprise at least for the faithful.

Response from developer

We are sorry you feel that way. Over 98% of our users are already running macOS Mojave or higher and not only is a lot of work to maintain Ulysses for older macOS versions, it makes the overall app more unstable. Besides, by the time we dropped support for macOS High Sierra, incompatible Macs were at least 9 Years old. Regarding your suggestion to leave the app in the state once the subscription ends: That's something we discussed but decided against. We explain the exact reasoning here: ulys.app/move I hope this clears things up. In case of any further questions, please don't hesitate to reach out directly via help@ulysses.app —Andrea

Can lose all files

Ulysses has been my writing app for the last 3 or 4 years or so, being an amazing tool to write, but yesterday I lost that 3 or 4 years worth of data for no particular reason.

The backup exists, however right-click on a sheet yields no "Restore to iCloud" button despite formal instructions and even previous videos stating so.

Lastly, the website support button doesn't allow for proper sending of feedback, and therefore I cannot submit my problem for support.

So despite being an amazing app, soured by this bad experience, will rectify this review once these problems are solved.

Response from developer

We are terribly sorry about the trouble you are experienced. As you already know, Ulysses creates backups of your work regularly in the background, so your work should always be safe. On iOS, if you go to your library in Ulysses and tap settings (the gear icon) › "Backup…”, you should see a list of recent backups done by the app. On a Mac, you can see your backups in “File” › “Browse Backups…”. Additionally, you can select the sheet and go to "File” › "Browse All Versions…” to open a sheet history. Further information about the backing up and restoring sheets are outlined in the comprehensive tutorial on our website: ulys.app/backup As for your disappearance of your texts: Sometimes, macOS logs you out of iCloud after installing a minor update. Would you mind checking if the iCloud section is enabled in Ulysses’ preferences › Library? If it‘s grayed out, could you please ensure iCloud is activated in System Preferences › Apple ID and that you are logged in with the same iCloud account (not necessarily identical to your Apple ID)? Additionally, iCloud Drive must be enabled in “Apps on this Mac using iCloud” and “Ulysses” must be checked under “Options…”. After you activated it, Ulysses library should show up again. If not, please don't hesitate to contact us via help@ulysses.app —Alex

Focus or Features? You decide.

Ullyses is the app for the consumate writer, the writer who obsesses over process and ritual but knows that when the deadline looms, it's time to get to work. It has all the bells and whistles of word processing programs without being a "word processing program." You'll notice Ulysses lacks the spade of distracting options, though it has those in droves. The difference is that it's housed in a modern UX design that can push away all distractions with one button for supremely focused writing. What's more, you can customize the look and feel of your font, background color and paragraph width to create a consistent experience for yourself regardless of what the final product may look like. Put simply, this is the home for my writing. Trust me, having a dedicated desktop app brings the writing home, away from the distracting internet.

A Screenplay Version Of This Please!

Ulysses has become one of the most used programs I have. I use it for everything from personal journaling, to brainstorming, to keeping track of my daily workouts... did I say workouts? Yes... Every morning I sit down at the laptop and invent a workout. Then I take my phone, head to the backyard, crank the music, and open the Ulysses on my phone and there's my workout. It's perfect...

If I could add one thing to this program, it would be an ability to format it like a screenplay. The setup of the app with mulitple "entries" is so convenient. It would make writing scenes, or ideas for productions, a lot easier to keep track of. I've experimented with the export settings but it doesn't seem to be compatible with any kind of standard format for screenplays.

The Writer Reborn

I'm a professional writer that mosrly writes customer success stories, or, case studies as they're better known. I recenlty bought a MacBook after cheating on Apple with Google. Yes, I used a Chromebook for my writing, When I decided to get a Mac I had a look again for my distraction free writing tools of choice - iAWriter and Byword. Then I found Ulysses. Wow. Initially it was going to be just for my personal writing (I write memoir and short stories mostly). After a week of using it for those purposes, I am now using it for ALL my writing. Just the most incredible tool. The combination of Ulysses and my MacBook Air actually makes me want to writer even more. Well done to everyone involved in bringing this amazing writiing platform to the world.

It's the tiny little details that make the difference

You don't notice how fast you're going in a German car. And you don't realise how productive Ulysses is until you look back over what you have achieved.

The way that you can do the majority of your work without touching the mouse alone is joyful.

I'm > 11,000 words into writing a technical, non-fiction book. It's a difficult topic to write about because of interdependent ideas. Creating the structure for the book is almost as hard as writing the content. I actually don't know how I would do it without Ulysses. I make heavy use of creating / splitting / joining and moving sheets around at will. It would be horrible to attempt that any other way.

The subscription model is the only sane way of running a software business. As a consumer, I want the latest and I want the tools that I rely on to be there for me in the long term. My subscription supports the continual development and I'm very happy to pay.

V20 Dashboard breaks Notes and Images

The new V20 update introduces Dashboard but completely breaks the streamlined display of Notes and Images which allowed to see all info on the pane in one go. At the very least there should be an option for the Dashboard to allow for displaying of Notes and Images.

Response from developer

We are sorry you feel that way. I've forwarded your suggestion to have the option to display notes and images on the same pane to our developers. They will discuss this internally. I can't make any promises when or whether we will implement this feature, but please consider your vote counted. Should you have any further requests, please don't hesitate to contact us directly via help@ulysses.app —Andrea

Love this application

I’m currently writing a non-fiction book and in a bachelors proram getting ready for Law School. So I needed an alternative to Microsoft Word and Grammarly to help make my papers look more legit and professional. This is a perfect app. I took a chance on this and began using it wondering if it would be worth the money and it is. The footnote feature is specifically what I was looking for and the heading and automatic formatting. This helps me to make all my book chapters and sections look professional and really clean. If I had one criticism it would be a more in depth explination of the all the features. Maybe I didn’t pay attention long enough during the tutorial - so I’m giving 5 stars because that’s probably what happened - but overall, the interface is easy to use, the layout is awesome, and the product is amazing. I’m a big supporter of independent platforms and getting small businesses off the ground. This is a great and much easier platform to use than Microsoft Word. Glad to be part of the team, guys! Keep putting out god work!

Great for productivity

Feels modern (complexity hidden, simple interface, powerful underneath) with the features I need from Scrivener, without the mess and complexity, and the ease-of-use I need from Bear, but with the extra power I need for organising large documents and publishing to the web. Syncing works well between MacBook, iMac, iPhone and iPad (yikes, maybe I am an Apple fanboy).
I write everything I possibly can in Ulysses - when I have to go back to Word or Google docs I miss it.
I have an educational licence and the price is fair.

Quality has tanked

For the last few years, I've not only been a happy subscriber but what companies call a promoter. I would select 10 when asked how likely I would recommend Ulysses. The frequent updates were proof that my money was feeding innovation.

Now, not so much. I used to be able to go from my iPad to my Mac to my iPhone instantly to keep working. But for months I've had iCloud sync issues. Today, I waited and waited for something I started writing on my iPad to show up on my Mac. Even force syncing (which I shouldn't have to do so much) wouldn't work. Eventually I had to use the Universal Clipboard to copy the original sheet on my iPad to a new sheet on my Mac.

Their support (and replies to reviews) state it's an iCloud issue, not theirs. Sorry, but that's BS. Literally everything else in my iCloud Drive syncs instantaneously. Maybe they SHOULD have a public folder on in iCloud Drive like the other apps that work flawlessly.
